What they liked

  • Truly matte finish without shine
  • Invisible on skin, easy to reapply
  • Oil-absorbing, ideal for oily skin

What they flagged

  • Requires heavy swiping to achieve SPF
  • White cast on deeper skin tones
  • Poor gliding and can feel thick

What the gurus are saying

This sunscreen's signature matte, powdery finish that doesn't leave shine or grease stands out as its defining strength, especially for oily skin, and the stick format makes reapplication convenient on hands and exposed areas. However, the heavy mattifying powder can leave a white cast on deeper skin tones if not thoroughly rubbed in, and it does pick up and disturb makeup on reapplication, so it works best on bare skin or for touch-ups on areas like hands and legs rather than over foundation. One reviewer found the formula too thick and clumpy to apply smoothly, though most praise its lightweight, invisible feel and ease of use.

"Glow by Ramon released this sunscreen stick with Beauty of Joseon around the time of my original video. He mentioned that he tweaked the formula to get more payout, and my testing does show that. This was actually the first stick where I managed to hit the labeled SPF, but to get there, it took about 1 and 1/2 minutes of swiping it on my face."

"I just started using this sunscreen this year. One of my favorite hydrating sunscreens. I like the texture of this one. For those who have dry, dehydrated skin, this is a little thicker texture, but still very lightweight, but not watery. It goes on like a thicker cream, but it just blends in so well. If you have dry, dehydrated skin, it's going to trap in all that moisture. And if you had hyaluronic acid serum on first and then put this right over it, it will do a great job as being like a moisturizer and a sunscreen at the same time. There's no greasy finish to it. And this layers well with makeup. And you can see there's no white cast with this. This does have chemical UV filters."

Dermatologist Reviews: The Best Sunscreens of 2024
"This is their matte sunstick. Mugwort has been quite popular in the K Beauty world and these botanical ingredients in here have so far been pretty gentle for a lot of my patients so it's been good, but I always worry about botanical ingredients in sunscreens causing allergic contact dermatitis. This one's been really nice though. It has a kind of a grain tint, has silica, so if you have oily skin it helps pick up the excess oil and it rubs in really nice. So this has been a nice portable sunstick if you don't want the white cast."
Must-try K-beauty Sunscreens According To A Dermatologist!
"For reapplication I wanted to mention the Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick. A lot of sun sticks we talk about in the US have a white cast, this one you can reapply without any white cast. It has cooling ingredients, antioxidants, it's soothing, goes on with a matte finish. It's a great stick, very portable. I've taken this on my trips, I brought it to Mexico and it's just easy to apply a stick sunscreen to your skin because if your hands are dirty, say I'm playing golf, I don't want to use my dirty hands to apply a cream on my face, the stick is reliable. When you apply it though, make sure to do four to five swipes in a particular area before moving on because we can't quantify an appropriate amount of sunscreen from your stick as well as say a cream. You need a half teaspoon for your face, ears and neck, that's more quantifiable versus a stick."

Ranking 20 Top Selling Products at Olive Young!
"My number nine pick is the Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick SPF 50. This is currently ranking number 13 in Sunncare at Alliive Young Global. I really like it. I think what makes it unique and why it's selling so well is because it claims to be matte and it delivers on that promise. So many sunscreens are very dewy, very shiny, right, I mean it's really hard to find something that doesn't have too much of a finish or is actually matte, and I think that this really does the trick. Sun sticks I like, I think they're very handy for reapplication. They're great for going over makeup."
These are the 10 Top Selling Sunscreens at Yesstyle!
"I really like this. When it was first released I gave it a very favorable positive review, especially because I feel like there's not that many matte sunscreens on the K Beauty market. I think this is unique in that it claims that it's matte and it actually does deliver on a matness to this. There's not really a shininess, which is great. I do also feel like this sidesteps the pitfalls that many sun sticks fall into, where they can kind of get a little waxy, they can get a little balmy and a little thick on the skin. While that can be good, it also just cannot feel cute. It can just feel really heavy and like pore clogging on the skin. So I really like the airiness of this, the dry touchness of this sunstick. It's a really really interesting texture that feels amazing on the skin, and if you're looking for something matte, like definitely this is a great one."

5 Ways to Reapply Sunscreen Over Makeup (The Honest Guide)
"This is the Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick SPF 50 plus PA plus four protection. This is a chemical sunscreen using the all new generation chemical filters. This has a lot of the same convenience factor as the sun packs do because this is a solid stick sunscreen. So this is really convenient for carrying in a pocket or in a purse. I carry this in my purse, and I have been doing so for at least my third summer now. I actually just got a fresh stick. I'm really excited to pop this one in my purse. You have seen me recommend actually using this for the tops of your hands when you're driving. I absolutely love this because you don't think about your hands a lot when it comes to sunscreen, but when you're driving right on top of the steering wheel, the UV's coming into the windows, and it is hitting the tops of your hands."

"I tend to be oily in the summer, so this matte sunstick was really nice. It would be like two birds with one stone for me: mattifying and SPF protection. This is the SPF 50 plus PA++++. It is a super smooth glide sunstick. It controls that shine without feeling waxy or heavy and my face wasn't sticky. Like my hair didn't stick to my face afterwards like some of the US sunscreens do to me. It does apply really evenly with the matte finish. And it's perfect over makeup. You can wear it on bare skin too, but I really did wear it over top of makeup because I would often go to work and then after work we would have like a quick golf meet. So I did have some blush on and I found that this SPF stick applied pretty easy on top of the makeup and makeup still look decent. This stick will also help absorb some of that excess oil throughout the day while providing the broadspectrum protection. So it's perfect for that oily combination or even acne prone skin. The key ingredients are the mugwort extract, chameleia japonica seed oil, silica, vitamin E, and centella asiatica extract."

"One beef that I have with any sunstick that I've tried is they are very oily, they tend to be almost like a lip balm on your face. But this product is the only one that I can comfortably apply on my face because it doesn't give me that like lip baliness all over my face. It actually feels like there's no shininess or glow to it because this is also made for oily skin in mind. It gives that beautiful kind of powdery finish but it's very comfortable on your skin. I've been really enjoying this. During the development process I was like I need it more matte and they're like you have oil soluble actives in here that are making it oilier so we took those out. There's a lot of powder mattifiers in there but if you have deeper skin those powder mattifiers can leave a white cast if you don't rub it in afterwards. And part of the incentive of a sunstick is you don't have to rub it necessarily, so that is something to note. It's not the most white cast free on very deep skin."

"This is a really great mattifying primer that you can layer underneath your makeup. It's made with chemical UV filters, and it literally blurs out your pores. You wouldn't need a primer if you apply this. It's definitely going to be a staple in summer for me. I would be traveling with this everywhere, I would apply this from head to toe. The only downside is that it only has 18 grams, which is 0.63 ounces, so it's definitely not a generous amount, but still I think it's a really really great product. I love the mugwort, it's so amazing for just calming your skin. It's a very Korean traditional ingredient. It also has turmeric extract and Camellia for moisturizing, and silica for just mattifying your skin, so definitely for oily girls."

"It's kind of ironic, I said their sunscreen is amazing, but the sunstick isn't really. It's made for oily skin, it's their matte sunstick, and you can't really feel it on your skin, but if you have dry skin it feels like you're rubbing hard soap on your face. You can use the sunstick for touchups, like at the mountain, but I don't think a sunstick can replace a classic sunscreen. It's easy to carry around and the packaging is kind of cute with no scent, but I don't think it's worth it."

Is VIRAL TIKTOK skincare *Worth the HYPE?* | BRUTALLY HONEST REVIEW
"The Beauty of Joseon sunstick is for oily skin, but for me it was so hard, like soap, that my face turned red when I applied it. A lot of people say it pills, and that's because it's too hard to rub in. It barely has any scent, it's the most matte of the three, it feels like something is there right after applying but a few minutes later you can barely feel it. You may like the matte finish if you have oily skin, but I don't recommend it because it's too hard to apply. This is my least favorite."

"This is titled the matte sunstick with mugwort and chamelia and let me say this is the most mattifying sunstick I've literally ever used. I am an oily babe, look at how this cuts down the grease on my cheeks, look at how this literally cuts down the grease on my nose. Now if you're dry you're going to hate this but if you loved the purple protector you are going to love this. If you're oily this is like a dream come true, forget blotting sheets, like you don't need blotting sheets anymore, you just swipe this on. It has mugwort and chamelia, both of those are great antioxidants. Mugwort is actually used in Korea for blemish prone skin. It's a good antioxidant and at the very best it's wonderful for blemishes and hormone balance if you want to believe that."

"I have the Beauty of Joseon one sometimes and that one can look a little chalky, so the fact that this one is a little bit more smooth than the Beauty of Joseon one is actually nice. But I wear a lot of makeup so usually I'm not reapplying my makeup with a sunscreen stick. I'll usually go in with a spray, but even then that's not as effective as just wearing sunscreen of course, like a lotion, but it works."

"Their matte sunstick has really good sunscreen active ingredients for broadspectrum UV protection. Avobenzone, which is excellent for UVA protection, and it has Octinoxate and Avobenzone T150. There's no white cast with this. It has Centella, which is anti-inflammatory, turmeric root extract also is anti-inflammatory, hyaluronic acid and glycerin are hydrating, and panthenol is very moisturizing. These sunscreen sticks are kind of handy for using as an SPF lip balm. I ended up using this one up as my SPF lip balm, using it a lot on my lips."

"It's kind of difficult to apply the stick that much so in order to get in order to get to that SPF you have to apply enough and with the stick it's a lot harder to apply enough. Eighteen dollars for 0.63 ounces versus the sun relief rice plus probiotics eighteen dollars for 1.69 ounces so while the stick is great, I don't think it's something I would repurchase. I don't really use sticks that often and it's more expensive than a similar product with more reliable protection that I genuinely like a lot more."

"Yes, I agree it does not sting the eyes for a chemical sunscreen stick and for a chemical sunscreen it is quite remarkable. However, I have certain issues with this particular product. Given the nature of the filters being used, my issue with this type of sunscreen stick is that you have a false sense of security that you've used enough to protect your face when you haven't gotten the right amount. You need around two full finger lengths if not three to get your face, your ears and even your neck covered. I went ahead and did a UV test using my UV camera and found that I had to go up to twelve to sixteen swipes of this to get the same amount of coverage compared to a little amount of the actual cream sunscreen. So you do need a lot more of this to get the coverage that you need. I think it's a great adjunct if you're an athlete, you're on the go, you're running, but you need to do a lot more swipes than you actually think you need in order to get the right coverage. Nice product, just don't be fooled by it. You need a lot more. More is more applies to this type of sunscreen stick."

"I would definitely recommend the Beauty of Joseon Sun Stick. I swear by that one. It is such a good one to be able to touch up your sunscreen throughout the day. In my opinion, it's the best sun stick out there. I was kind of a sun stick hater before I discovered that product."

Why You Should Stop Using Skin Care
"If you're wanting like the easiest, most simple on-the-go minimal sunscreen ever, I would definitely recommend the Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick SPF 50. This one has come in clutch so many different times when I am taking a break from skincare or intentionally doing a skin fast just because it's so easy to apply on your skin. You literally swipe, within 10 seconds, you're done. You're good. There's no mess. You can do it on the go. And one of the things I love about this one is that it is mattifying as well. If you're someone like me who struggles with really oily skin and you notice that your skin is starting to accumulate a lot of oil and looking really greasy in your skin fast, I would definitely recommend this one because it does a great job of mattifying the skin while also protecting it."
My Most Repurchased Korean Skin Care Products 🧴
"If you're someone who absolutely abhors any type of shininess on your skin, because as someone who has really oily skin, I get not wanting to look extra shiny and the frustration of trying to find a sunscreen that doesn't make you look more greasy, this one's for you. I've repurchased it so many times and always carry it around with me wherever I go. [...] I cannot describe how much I love this formula and how mind blown I was when I first used it. I've used so many sunsticks over the years and never really fell in love with them, but then I started using this one and I could not be more impressed by how easily this glides onto the skin while making you look mattified. If you have oily skin, you absolutely have to try this one out because it's basically like a sunscreen powder and blotting paper in one. The way that this mattifies the skin is so incredible while still providing good sunscreen protection all in a really easy to [...] carry on-the-go stick formula. And it's a great price point. You can get this for under $10."
The BEST Sunscreens of 2023
"I've never really been a stick sunscreen person until I started using this product because my experience with stick sunscreens has always been very greasy, white cast heavy, not necessarily the most pleasant to use and always making my skin super oily. But this product is magic in a stick. The first reason is that it's a Korean sunscreen which uses Korean sunscreen filters which are not yet permitted in sunscreen products in the USA but are so much better than anything we have here because it doesn't create a white cast on the skin at all, which means if you have a darker skin tone, a deeper complexion, this product is great for you. This one not only applies with such a nice lightweight consistency but it actually mattifies the skin, which is why I fell so in love with it because when you're applying a bunch of skincare products and you apply greasy sunscreen on top of it your skin can tend to look just really overly shiny. And particularly if you're going to be reapplying your sunscreen throughout the day, a more glowy sunscreen can tend to look greasy really quick. This one looks so good on the skin that I could always count on reapplying it multiple times throughout the day without worrying about if my skin was going to look greasy or shiny. It's $18, can work for any skin type but I feel like people with oily skin are definitely going to appreciate it the most, with awesome ingredients like green tea oil to help soothe sensitivity and redness, turmeric which has brightening abilities, and a ton of vegetable extracts."

"If you're like 'I don't like wearing a sunscreen, it's the worst experience, I hate looking pasty and white,' do I have a product for you. I seriously love this product, it's the Beauty of Joseon SPF 50 sunscreen stick. I remember the first time I used this, when I swiped it on my skin I was like, what sorcery and magic have gone into this product, because there's no greasiness, there's no shininess, absolutely no white cast. It's so easy to just swipe it, super quick, and continue on your merry way. And best of all, it's super affordable. If you really struggle to use any skincare products at all, I would definitely recommend getting this product because it's just so easy. I mean, I carry one around with me like literally 24/7, just swipey swipey and you're good."

"This stick sunscreen the Beauty of Joseon SPF 50 sunscreen I've been talking about this one non-stop lately because it truly like just completely revolutionized the sunscreen reapplication game. You don't have to use your fingers at all, you just roll it up right here, glide it across your face and there's literally no white cast. I discovered this product about two weeks ago and I've been using it every day because it's so freaking good. The best part about it is that this is only ten dollars because it's an incredible Korean skincare product and Korean skincare is light years ahead of the USA. Whether you just want to reapply your sunscreen throughout the day or you have a darker skin tone or you even want to apply your sunscreen over makeup, this is such a good product for it. Being that it's only ten dollars, it is such a good bang for your buck to make sure that your skin is protected."
New to Korean Skin Care? The BEST Products to Start With!
"I use it religiously, it's the Beauty of Joseon matte sunstick. This one changed my life, not even joking. Coming from someone who has used many sunscreens where I get so frustrated afterwards because my skin looks greasy, it looks shiny, white cast, heavy, pasty, when I first used this one I was like how does my skin look better, like it looks more balanced. It truly feels invisible. I probably over apply this because when I rub it across my skin I'm like I genuinely can't see if it's there. It works so well. If you're someone with oily skin you will definitely love this one. The difficult part about sunscreen comes down to reapplication and being able to just swipe swipe and go with this product is so easy because it really is invisible. It's crazy and there's a reason why this one is so viral online and you've probably seen it anywhere is it's genuinely because it's incredible. It's just the best."

"I have to recommend my favorite stick sunscreen, which is amazing for touching up your skin throughout the day. The Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick SPF 50. This one is incredible because it's so easy to just swipe on your skin to give you that additional protection throughout the day. And it's mattifying, so you don't have to worry about your skin looking extra greasy. The really gross shininess and greasiness that's unfortunately common with a lot of American sunscreens. You don't have to worry about this one. And of course, it has zero white cast or gray cast. It truly is invisible and one of the best sunscreens that I love to use to touch up throughout the day."

"I cannot even describe how obsessed with this product I am. It is the Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick. I am not necessarily a big sun stick person, I do prefer a cream, however sometimes I struggle to reapply my skincare routine, and that's where sticks can really come in handy. This product has officially blown my mind because not only does it effectively apply sunscreen on your face, it has literally zero white cast. Also it mattifies the skin. Do you know how hard it is to find a sunscreen that mattifies the skin? It's like impossible. I found maybe three sunscreens that actually effectively keep the skin really matte. I will be purchasing this for the rest of my life. I found it. This is an incredible one. I highly recommend it."

The BEST Korean Skin Care of 2023
"I have tried so many whether it be USA mineral ones and even a bunch of Korean ones like when I went to Korea I bought a bunch of sunscreen sticks and none of them compare to the quality of the formula that the Beauty of Joseon one has. It is so good the first time I used it I was like is this real how is this even a thing because it's such a fantastic formula. I'm absolutely obsessed. This is an $18 sunscreen stick that I would definitely say can work for any skin type but people with oily skin would specifically really enjoy because not only does it have great ingredients like green tea oil turmeric and a ton of vegetable extracts, the reason I fell in love with this product is because of the finish on the skin. It does such an incredible job of feeling completely invisible but not making your skin look greasy or shiny, which is one of the biggest grievances I've had with a lot of stick sunscreens. They'll look nice when you put them on but they just make your skin look so shiny and greasy throughout the day and I never have to worry about it with this one. If anything this stick sunscreen helps to actually mattify my face and get rid of any excess shine or greasiness. I've continued to use it and I absolutely love the formula. It truly feels like an effortless product where you can just swipe on your sunscreen throughout the day and it has bomb ingredients from a great brand. I'd have to say this is one of the very top products from this year."
TikTok Viral Products That Are *Actually* Worth It
"As someone with oily skin who like every other human being on the planet struggles with sunscreen reapplication, I immediately fell in love with this product when I first used it because when you swipe it on your face it delivers this blurring mattifying effect that I truly have never seen with any other sunscreen on the market. With any other SPF product at some level you are going to get that glowy, that little bit of stickiness with some of them, even some white cast. This one's literally nothing. I've reapplied it so many times and it always looks amazing. Even though yes it's a relatively small stick, I love that because it makes it so easy to carry it around in your pocket or in your bag. I don't recommend using this as your sole sunscreen. I still think it's good to use a cream sunscreen in the morning because it provides the most protection, but this is such a good way of getting that reapplication."

"I would definitely recommend the Beauty of Joseon Sun Stick. I swear by that one. It is such a good one to be able to touch up your sunscreen throughout the day. In my opinion, it's the best sun stick out there. I was kind of a sun stick hater before I discovered that product."

"It has chemical filters but really great filters that protect against UVA as well as UVB. The filters include tinosorb S and tinosorb T, which are great UVA and UVB filters. It also contains silica powder that helps to absorb sebum, creates a pore blurring and mattifying finish. It's airy, it's lightweight, helps add photo protection while mattifying your skin at the same time, so really great for those with oily or combination skin that are seeking a light mattifying finish, helping to protect their skin at the same time while reducing that shiny greasy look. This is also fragrance and essential oil free, so suitable for those with sensitive skin as well."

Dermatologist Tests and Reviews Korean Sunscreens and Sunsticks
"This sunscreen stick contains chemical filters including avobenzone and octinoxate. It also contains two of the ingredients including mugwort and green tea. It has sebum control silica powder that actually helps to provide mattifying effects. This is actually by far one of the most mattifying sunscreen sticks I've used. It's really ideal for those with oily and combination skin who are seeking a sunscreen stick that's going to help with some protection but also that has a smooth velvety but mattifying finish. This stick is not going to make your skin feel heavy, greasy or sticky in any way. Really nice again for those who want a little more sebum control and one that feels lightweight. Great for those with oily and combination skin."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
