  • Strong ginseng scent lingers during use
  • Best used as first cleanse, not standalone

What the gurus are saying

This oil cleanser earns consistent praise for removing waterproof makeup and sunscreen effectively while feeling lighter than typical oil cleansers, though it requires a few extra pumps due to its thinner texture. The ginseng and blend of antioxidant-rich oils appeal to those seeking both efficacy and skincare benefit, but dermatologists suggest those with oily or acne-prone skin may want to skip it, since the soybean oil base sits at a moderate level on the comedogenic scale. Those with normal to dry skin find it a gentle, affordable workhorse for a first cleanse, often followed by a water-based cleanser.

"I absolutely love Beauty of Joseon, I've diligently recommended this brand for years and I think all of their products are amazing. This cleansing oil has really high quality ingredients, it uses soybean oil to help break up dirt and sebum, it has a high concentration of ginseng, and it also has green tea oil. But I might take back everything I just said, because cleansing oils are really only meant to break up oil, sebum, and dirt, they aren't necessarily meant to be left on the skin all day, and if you combine that oil with sunscreen or makeup residue still on your face it's basically just asking for you to break out more. Truthfully, I would have much preferred if she just went in with a water based cleanser instead of an oil cleanser, or at least added a foam or gel cleanser afterward."

"I really like their cleansing oil, they have a really nice cleansing oil. It has almost a tea scent to it, [...] like tea leaves that have been boiled, [...] but it's nice. I've tried and tested most cleansing oils on the market, [...] I've become a power user of cleansing oils, and I think it's my favorite viscosity [...] of any cleansing oil that I've used, the thickness of it is my favorite experiential of any cleansing oil on the market. Performance-wise, just as a fun fact, my favorite is a different one, but as far as texture, it's one of my favorite products."

"I've been really liking the oil cleanser from Beauty of Joseon. Right now lately it has been my favorite cleanser. [...] It's the Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Cleansing Oil for waterproof makeup removal. It has a really tea-like smell in it, which actually smells like tea, which is kind of nice. But if you don't like the way tea smells, you might not like it."

"This is an oil cleanse that I used up by Beauty of Joseon. I like a double cleanse in the evening and I either use a balm or an oil first, and this one is beautiful. Not everybody loves an oil cleanse, but I really like the texture of an oil cleanse. It gets off all my eye makeup, emulsifies all that sunscreen, whisks all the dirt away, and then I can come in with a second cleanse."

"This was not my favorite cleansing oil. It was okay. It just wasn't like a go-to. I really like the Japanese Sapimo Cos cleansing oil or the DHC one."

"This is the Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Cleansing Oil. It's a lot thinner in consistency, more of a lightweight oil. It has an odor like a smoothie shop, kind of like a juice bar, which is an interesting experience, but it emulsified well. It's got soybean oil and ginseng oil in it, which I'm guessing is what gives it that aroma."

"Koreans don't really care about this brand but it's so hyped on social media, one of my friends even asked if it's from North Korea because of the name, so I think they're targeting people outside Korea. Overall it's pretty good, it emulsifies and erases makeup well, the formula is pretty good, but I hate the scent so much, the ginseng smell. While I'm emulsifying and rinsing it off, for two or three minutes I can still feel that ginseng tang. Why don't they make a no scent version, please, if you're really sensitive about scent, keep that in mind."

"Like I always say with their cleansers, it's fine if you can handle the scent, but for me it smells too gingsengy. The good thing is that once you wash it away you don't really feel that scent anymore. It's not too heavy, more like a light oil texture, and if you're worried about oil clogging your pores this one is pretty good, it emulsifies and cleanses well. Compared to another cleansing oil I use though, I think this one cleanses a little less well, so I'd recommend it if you're more of a beginner with cleansing oils and you just want to remove light makeup or sunscreen."

"This one is also a synthetic oil, but it's in the middle between the Anua, the Skin1004, and my favorite, so a little heavier than the Anua and Skin1004 but still very light. You can't do a half pump with this one, you have to do a full pump or nothing, they really need to change the packaging. I can smell it, my husband is a really picky guy and he doesn't like heavy scents but he said this one is okay, and it cleanses so well. If you can handle the scent it's still a pretty good one, it erases well and emulsifies well."

"The other thing with this is it is very pungent, so even though there's no fragrance in this particular product, there's a lot of different oils in here and one of them, an essential oil, is giving off a very strong smell. I really wouldn't recommend this if you have dry skin, even if it's inflamed. I wouldn't recommend it if you have oily skin because it could be comedogenic. For me, unfortunately, this is a bit of a fail."

BEST & WORST OIL CLEANSERS
"It's got glycine, which is soy oil, which is three out of five on the comedogenic scale, so this is good for normal to dry skin, but I would avoid this for oily, acne-prone skin. I like that it's got ginseng in it, it's an antioxidant which helps to mop up free radicals that can damage collagen. So if you have normal to dry skin, love the product, worth purchasing."

"The Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Cleansing Oil is a very nice cleansing oil, super light feeling and no scent to it which is nice. It's got some nice ginseng and does a pretty good job removing makeup and sunscreen. It's a little lighter than the typical oil cleanser since a lot of them can be kind of thick, but this one was very thin so it took several pumps to get the job done, but it did a good job. It's super affordable which is also wonderful."

"The ginseng cleanser has a base of soybean oil which is a lot lighter but also a stellar cleansing oil. This still has a very lush and comforting texture as you're applying it as opposed to a very thin one. What draws me to this formula is really the medicinal scent. I just love that first whiff as I'm applying it. It's very herbal and refreshing in that it wakes everything up. It's a very sagacious and very grounding scent. I definitely detect the nigella and svia as well and those are stimulating the senses but relaxing at the same time. This all comes naturally from the ingredients. The brand doesn't add additional fragrances or essential oils for the sake of scent."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
