What the gurus are saying

This fragrance-free gel cream with rice bran water, ginseng, and ceramides earns praise for delivering hydration to dry and dehydrated skin. However, it may feel too thick for oily or combination skin types, and the coconut oil could irritate those prone to breakouts. Most note it's a straightforward hydrating moisturizer without heavy actives, and many appreciate its affordable price point and versatility under makeup or as an overnight treatment.

"This rich cream is formulated with natural ingredients including ginseng root water, rice bran water, honey extract, and safflower oil, plus niacinamide, squalane, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides to reinforce the moisture barrier. It has a lotiony cream texture, almost like a gel lotion, that takes a moment to soak in but sets to a natural, non-tacky finish and slightly plumps skin. It works nicely under sunscreen with no peeling issues, and can be used morning, evening, or midday. It's friendly for all skin types including acne-prone and sensitive skin. At 3.38 oz for 30 dollars it's a good price for the size. It delivers on everything it promises, though at night in winter it's not quite enough hydration on its own, and it lacks a little bit of the wow factor. [...] I've repurchased it, and [...] I give this one a nine out of 10."

"It's fragrance free. Their initial version of this did not was not fragrance-free, which turned me off to the brand for quite some time, but I'm back on board now. [...] We've got rice bran water, ginseng water, sunflower seed oil, coconut oil, and ceramides. So for acne prone skin, it depends on how you react to coconut oil. That is always one that's you never know. Some people's skin loves it, some people's skin hates it. [...] This stuff's quite nice. I'm glad they made it fragrance-free. [...] This one's great for dry skin."

"This is a really nice, very rich cream. It's not so much a daytime cream for me, it's more of an evening type, kind of last step type cream because it is so, so thick. [...] It's thick but it's lovely and it plays well as a last step evening type moisturizer. I like the reformulated version better than the original version."

"The Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream is on sale. Normally, this is $36.99 for the tube. This is another excellent Korean brand, but right now you can get this $28.99. This has rice bran water in it, which is hydrating, soothing, and has compounds in it that can help with skin brightening, ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamides. Kind of like a Korean elevated version of CeraVe."

"I love Beauty of Joseon. I think they're a great brand. This is one I'm willing to bet it's quite good. Rice brand water. Very hydrating. So I'm liking this, but I personally would probably keep my eye peeled and see if it goes on sale. It might not though. It might not. Some of these K beauty drops I get in here, they're in one month and they're out the next, you know, they fly off the shelves and that's it."

"I compared it side by side and honestly the texture and scent are very similar to its rival. But if you leave it on for a while, the Beauty of Joseon stays moisturized a little bit longer. My one complaint is I do not love the Instagram style packaging, it feels wasteful, though I know they also sell it in a tube version at Amazon which fixes that. Later on, next to the Medicube capsule cream, it felt like just too plain a moisturizer, but overall it is a solid, long lasting pick."

"This Beauty of Joseon cream isn't that thick, it feels more like a lotion. I like it. It's a pretty good moisturizer, it keeps my skin moisturized without getting too shiny."

"It smells of nothing which I love. A lot of moisturizers from the Korean skincare market can be a little bit heavy on the fragrance or just smell a little bit funky. This is scent neutral which is wonderful. I genuinely don't need a lot of this. That is enough to do the whole face and neck. Doesn't seem a lot but because this is so rich, it feels like velvet. You're putting this on the skin and it is like a velvet glove. [...] The name Dynasty screams opulence, elegance, next level luxury, and you're kind of getting all of that, but you're not paying for it. It's so inexpensive, which I love. [...] My skin feels so good, and I think this is going to be my treat moisturizer that I take with me all the way through winter."

BEST KOREAN SKINCARE BRAND 2024 - Beauty Of Joseon Review
"This is a nice cream if you have a super super dry skin type, but for everyone else I think it might just be a little bit too thick and occlusive. It occupies that middle ground where it's not enough for the dry skin folk but it's too much for the oily folk and everyone in between. I think there's just other options. There's nothing wrong with it, it's not a terrible product, I just think there's better options on the market."

"The Dynasty Cream is a little thick, it's a whipped formula, but the ingredients are skin-soothing, barrier support, pure amazing anti-aging. But overall it'll hydrate, plump, and moisturize your skin. So dry skin, that's it."

"It's quite a light moisturizer and doesn't have much actives. The seventh ingredient in here is niacinamide, so that's where the strength barrier effect is coming from. It's a naif safe product, meaning no denat alcohol, no fragrance, and no essential oils. This is very important for skin of color because we can't afford any irritation to our skin. I'd say this is a hydrating moisturizer, it's naif safe, it's very light. I don't like the packaging; it would be better if it was an airless pump from a hygiene perspective. But I would give this a nice eight out of ten because it does what it says. They haven't given you outrageous claims which they haven't matched; they've matched quite reasonable claims."

"I absolutely fell in love with this particular sunscreen because not only does it cover for all of UVA and UVB, it is extremely lightweight in texture and it goes on so silky smooth. It does not irritate the eyes, it is hydrating, so if somebody is a little bit oily and doesn't want to use a moisturizer underneath their sunscreen, you absolutely do not need one. And if you are dry, this might just be enough in terms of a moisturizer with sun protection. It has four different filters including tinosorb M, which is a hybrid between a physical and a chemical sunscreen and works really well in combination with other UV filters. It also has isocetrizinal, which is a very oil soluble UV filter suitable for water resistant formulations. Other key ingredients are niacinamide, which helps with your barrier function, and glycerin paste."

"The Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream is retinaldehyde and it is phenomenal because it's the most potent thing you can get over the counter without going to prescription. It is wonderful. It has antioxidants and ceramides. Yes, you can use it for fine lines and wrinkles around the eye, but use it all over the face. The fact that it's available on Amazon is the kind of thing that you want to restock on a monthly basis."

"This one from beauty of Joseon, oh my gosh, it's also that's pretty good, it's still got a little bit of residue left over. I've actually had this get tacky under my makeup. The beauty of Joseon is getting tacky. When I put the beauty of Joseon on my skin it definitely feels much more hydrating. "This was one of my first loves when I started this channel eight years ago and it was my introduction to Beauty of Joseon. The texture is a comforting creamy gel but also it's got that makeup gripping effect as well. It quite aggressively just locks in hydration for the long term so you're pretty much glowing all day. The Korean moisturizers are my favorite because they're the ones that give me that beautiful glowy hydrated healthy skin finish. This is a very hydrating beautiful glowy moisturizer, but also this is really great to use for massage because it has a long lasting slip to it, so I find this to be a great cream to use with devices whether it's laser, gua sha, vibration or EMS. Another really effective way I've used this, especially as we're going into the drier months, is as a sleeping mask. Before I go to bed I apply a thin layer over my moisturizer and it's just that moisture holding grippiness. You wake up in the morning with super plumped out skin."

"I have to talk about Dynasty Cream because this is the product that made me fall in love with Beauty of Joseon so many years ago. I really fell in love with this cream because it was the absolute answer for me when I was struggling with my dehydrated skin. I just could not get the right moisturizer, either things were too light, these really watery gel-like creams that felt really good on application but did not really hold hydration into my skin long term, and then I would find these creams that were actually just too dense and too heavy and too rich and would clog my pores. I really did need to find something that was a little bit of both. I needed the hydration and lightness of a gel but I needed the longevity of a cream, and I really feel like this is the cream that did it for me. It was that magical unicorn that brought all of those qualities together."

"I was very devoted to this cream for years truly years from 2015 to about 2018, 2019, [...] just using this all the time as my main squeeze moisturizer. [...] Beauty of Joseon has [...] been around for nearly 10 years. It's a really nice type of cream especially if you have combination skin type or if you suffer with some dehydration because it really just helps soothe a lot of the signs and symptoms that come with a slightly weak moisture barrier. It helps with dehydration, it helps with irritation, it helps with inflammation. It gives the right amount of moisture without overwhelming the skin. It's just the right amount of occlusivity without sealing off the skin. If you have the type of dehydrated skin that also has some oil on top, I think you're still going to like this cream. It's not totally a gel cream but it's not super duper silky buttery or rich either. It strikes a happy medium. [...] And it has some great ingredients in here too like ginseng."

Updating My Old Skincare Reviews, Did I Change My Mind?
"What I was missing in my routine was balance. My skin was so imbalanced and nothing in my routine was helping to correct that, and so that moisture that this cream provided was just enough. It also had ceramides in it, which was something I was building into my routine at the time. Now having so much more knowledge of self, I really know that my body needs to be supplemented with ceramides, and so this was a huge revelation for my skin and for myself. This served me so well, but it's not appropriate for my skin anymore. It's just not enough moisture. It's not enough occlusivity for where I'm at right now. This is still something that I do recommend quite a bit though for those who do suffer with dehydration, for those who have very classically combination skin and you're not leaning more dry. You're going to really like this cream. I think it is so good. They have changed it in the last couple of years. They have taken out the fragrance in the cream. They've tweaked a couple of the extracts. They've added ginseng into it. I think they upped the amount of niacinamide in here. They've done really great things to the formula. The texture is still very good. It's slightly different. It's maybe a little less moisturizing now, but I still think this is a really nice [...] in-between cream, in between a gel moisturizer and a really thick heavy moisturizer. It still has a lightness to it but it's still very balancing. A lot of the original qualities of the cream are maintained in the current formulation."
Yay
"This has a really nice gel cream texture that is a little bit on the heavier side for a gel. Going on it's really lightweight and hydrating and not at all greasy. I found that this is really good for prepping my skin under makeup and I'm actually wearing it under my makeup now. But for my dry skin in winter I found that I can just use a bit more and it still works really well. It features rice, brown ginseng, and niacinamide which are all great for hydrating skin. There's also some smoothing and brightening effects as well. If you're looking for a lightweight hydrating moisturizer, especially one that is fragrance-free, then this might be a really good option."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Source: DermNet

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.

Source: DermNet

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
