What the gurus are saying

Reviewers sharply divide on this product. Supporters praise its lightweight texture, multiple shade options, and iron oxide tint for melasma protection, with minimal white cast relative to mineral sunscreens. Critics report the opposite experience: nearly universal complaints of ashiness, white cast, blotchy appearance, thick formula, and poor reapplication across the entire shade range. Additional concerns include dryness from denatured alcohol and zinc oxide, transfer onto hands, and texture issues on dry patches. The disconnect is stark enough to suggest either batch variation or skin-type dependency, though some reviewers felt the product is unremarkable or overpriced.

"Beauty of Joseon is a tinted sunscreen that has iron oxides in it to make it tinted and block visible light, which is really important if you have melasma. That's a non-negotiable everyday apply your tinted sunscreen."

"When they announced they were launching a tinted sunscreen in a range of different shades, everybody got super excited. That's until they tried the product. Oh, this was a disaster. There wasn't a single shade in that entire collection that didn't leave people looking ashy or an unusual skin type. It just didn't sit well on anyone's skin tone. Any one of the shades, they just didn't work for anyone. Didn't matter what your skin tone was. You put this on and you look in the mirror and think, 'Yeah, it was giving distortion, white cast. It was giving like almost a blotchy appearance to the skin, too.' Absolute fail. People hated how thick the formula was and you couldn't reapply on top of itself. So, when it came to a reapplication, people just said, 'Well, it wasn't possible.' Everything that could go wrong with the sunscreen launch went wrong with this product. And it honestly baffles me that this passed testing that people signed off on this formula having used it. It was garbage."

They tried to be inclusive by having a range of different tones, which I definitely applaud, but unfortunately, any one of the shades just didn't work for anyone. There was nothing good or salvageable from that launch."

"It's a tinted zinc oxide containing sunscreen. Technically, it's a hybrid sunscreen because it has octyl salicylate in it, a SPF booster. It does not have a heavy cast. It requires a bit of effort to spread on the skin and there's a bit of streakiness as you're putting it on in the beginning, but relative to mineral sunscreens in general, the spread is not too bad. It's a thin fluid. I love the tint on this. It comes in 12 shades. I was able to tolerate this around my eyes, no problem. The iron oxides may protect against visible light, namely HEV wavelengths, the blue light from the sun, which is a big driver for melasma, especially in medium to deep skin tones."

"The Beauty of Joseon Daily Tinted Fluid Sunscreen with Broadspectrum SPF 40 is definitely geared towards the US market. Zinc oxide is listed as an active ingredient but there's also butyloctyl salicylate which is a sneaky chemical sunscreen filter. It's so lightweight it's practically water and it's so thin it's really quite beautiful. You can apply a lot and just not really notice it. This works beautifully under makeup or just on its own which is what I tend to do. I find there to be barely any coverage, just enough of a tint to mask a white cast. There are 12 shades of this which is really nice, and because of the blendability of it I can use like three of these shades and it would match me well."

"The texture is slightly thicker than the Korean version but still very much lightweight and non-greasy, and it still contains all the original ingredients like rice extract, probiotics, and Niacinamide. It still delivers that hydration without feeling thick or heavy, and it's still great for sensitive skin."

"They found a good balance between the tints, the undertones, the sheerness, and the zinc. I'm kind of leaning towards a six out of ten. I'm not over the moon about using this every single day because I am feeling some dryness. Denatured alcohol and zinc oxide are two ingredients that have historically, time after time, made my skin feel dry and dehydrated. The more I'm talking to you, the more I'm feeling it in my dry areas. It's not too bad, it's not super uncomfortable, but I didn't feel the drying until about the four-hour mark, so I was impressed that it didn't happen right away. If you're sensitive to denatured alcohol or a high percentage of zinc, you're going to feel it. Up close, you start to see the flaws, it's kind of settling into the lines, clinging to the dry patches, getting a little bit cakey, kind of breaking up."

"There's a high percentage of zinc and denatured alcohol, so if you're sensitive to those things you're going to feel it. When I start to see it up close, it's settling into the lines, clinging to the dry patches, getting a little bit cakey and breaking up. It's not fully settled on the skin even though it's very lightweight and breathable. When I touch my skin, a lot of that is transferring onto my hands, which is influencing me taking that a few more points off. I'm landing around a six on this. It's not a bad release, but I don't think it's going to make a place into my everyday daily driver circle of sunscreens."

"I was surprised at how much coverage it gave because typically tinted mineral sunscreens tend to feel like I put watercolors on my face sometimes, but I did like the finish. It's pretty. The UV filters are organic UV filters, so if that matters to you then that matters to you."

I Have a Lot to Say about Beauty of Joseon Tinted Mineral Sunscreen
"Initial thoughts on this Beauty of Joseon product is that I like it. I don't think that everyone with a deeper skin tone might have the same kind of experience with it because some of those deeper shades did look quite ashy to me. I would love to see how it looks on someone with a deeper, richer skin tone because I feel like you really need to get deeper skin tones correct, but the richer the skin tone is the more correct you've got to be. Overall I do like this. I was surprised at how much coverage it gave because typically tinted mineral sunscreens tend to feel like I put watercolors on my face sometimes with certain tinted moisturizer and tinted mineral sunscreen products, but I did like the finish. It's pretty, I'm not mad at it. This is not a product that I particularly use in my routine. I'm usually either no makeup whatsoever or a full face of makeup, so I usually don't wear these light foundation products. Had I been one of those people, I think this one is really nice."

"In terms of ingredients, it's just got a bunch of slip ingredients and silica and glycerin. To me it feels like a money grab. SPF 40 is okay, but if it's a very sunny day out, honestly I wouldn't rely on this. If it's SPF 40, the UVA protection is not going to be very high either. It feels a little bit greasier. Vitamin E being the last ingredient is the most exciting thing you have going on in a sunscreen. It's kind of a bummer."

"It applies okay, it looks just fine, but honestly the UVA protection probably can't compare to hardly any of these. This one definitely feels greasier on my skin. The US version feels kind of greasy and shiny, it's very tacky, very tacky, and it's quite sticky. You kind of want to give it 15 minutes to soak in so that shouldn't be as big of an issue, but it's easier to apply foundation after it's set rather than just applying this, giving it 10 seconds, and applying foundation over it."

"It is so sheer, so so sheer that the only tint I got was actually the whiteness from the zinc oxide side. It wasn't really anything tinty at all. And it peels like crazy. There's no playing around time with this. You have to put it on your skin, rub it in as little as possible, and then don't touch it. If you touch it, it clings to the dryness. I have very dry crevices and it was just clinging to them. I couldn't get it to work. I used primers, I used everything like extra hydration to try and get this to work around the area and it just didn't work. I gave this product way more time than I usually would, way more effort than I usually would for a product to the point where I was like this is getting ridiculous now. I shouldn't be having to put this much effort into getting a product to sit nicely on my skin."
