    What the gurus are saying

This serum earns consistent praise for delivering serious hydration in a weightless gel texture that absorbs completely without sitting on the skin. Green tea and mugwort work to calm inflammation and reduce redness, while panthenol at 5% strengthens the barrier and locks in moisture, making this a standout choice for anyone with dehydrated or sensitive skin who needs help without heavy creams. It plays well with actives like tretinoin, and even those dealing with acne or eczema-prone skin find it gentle enough to use daily.

"The calming serum is a great combination of green tea and panthenol. Green tea is great for soothing inflammation on the skin, the calming aspect of this particular product. It also brings a healthy dose of antioxidants into the skin. And then they're using panthenol which not only hydrates the skin, it helps to address dehydration symptoms on the skin but it's also barrier strengthening. Panthenol helps to support the lipid layer aka your skin barrier, and that's what helps to hold hydration in place and keep hydration on your skin in a long lasting way. So it's a really hydrating serum, but it's also a soothing serum as well. This is great if your skin is lacking hydration, if you're dealing with dehydration, or you're looking for a gentle serum, something to just support general skin health, your general skin barrier, some antioxidant care, some anti-inflammatory care, some general soothing without really harsh actives. This would be a good one."

"I know exactly what this is and I'm excited about this it is the Beauty of Joseon Calming Serum Green Tea and Panthenol. I absolutely adore this serum. I love all the serums from Beauty of Joseon but this one particularly is so good. It's very hydrating, kind of plumping, and has a calming effect to it as well. It is a serum that I can see working for all skin types because the texture is just so pleasing."

"The calming serum is panthenol and mugwort. It's incredibly hydrating. It's got this beautiful gel texture that not only hydrates but also soothes the skin. Mugwort is a traditional Korean ingredient, an herb that really brings some anti-inflammatory benefits to the skin and can reduce some redness."

"This contains 5% of panthenol as well as 50% of green tea and 30% of mugwort. The very first time I tried the serum a few years ago I fell so madly in love with it because it was so incredibly hydrating for my skin. Panthenol 5% I know it doesn't sound like a lot but it really is that effective range that helps to really hydrate the skin and fight the transepidermal water loss while also strengthening the skin barrier, and that's exactly what my skin needs. I do have chronically dehydrated skin and I think my barrier is always just a little bit deficient, it always just needs a little bit of a boost. I was so surprised the serum was able to do that without being heavy, without being creamy, without being rich. The serum really shocked me at how hard it went for my skin because it doesn't look like it would be that hydrating, it doesn't look like it would be that impressive. But if you have those types of needs, if you need dehydration replenishment, if you need your barrier to be taken care of but it can't be creamy, it can't be rich, this is the one. So so so impressive, really really hydrating, a great thin gel type of serum texture that absorbs deep into the skin."

"One of the most interesting ones is this one. It's the Beauty of Joseon Calming Serum: Green Tea + Panthenol. I am a sucker for green tea. I'm obsessed with this ingredient. It's so soothing. It's such a good antioxidant and it also does a little bit of oil control. It's just so good for the skin. It might be my favorite antioxidant, although I flip-flop between that and maybe ferulic acid. This one is 50% green tea water, like chamomile water. That's the first ingredient on the product. I love that. I also love a green tea toner that's like mostly green tea. And then panthenol, amazing hero ingredient for the skin barrier, but it's that hydration that really hits and it's just such a soothing product. The body of this is actually pretty rich. So it's like not sticky, not tacky, but it's very full and just settles in like thick water. Not sticky at all, not tacky. Sets into the skin really nicely and gives you that nice cooling, hydrating feel. Plus, it's loaded with a lot of great ingredients. And the elegance from Beauty of Joseon is really hard to match."

"This is the Beauty of Joseon Calming Serum. I've actually used one of their serums already. You can see I've used quite a bit of this one because it's beautiful under makeup. Serums are packed with things that really benefit your skin, hydrating ingredients. Unlike some thicker moisturizers, it is absorbed completely into the skin. We get all that goodness, the hydration goodness of the ingredients we choose to have in our serum, but it doesn't hang around on the skin. There's no layer."

"I've been using this quite a bit when I feel like I just need a little bit more moisture. This has made a really really big difference. This is a really nice like hydrating calming serum. I use this first on my skin which makes the retinol a little bit easier to spread a smaller amount on the skin. I'll usually do like however many drops of this, maybe I probably overdo it because I overdo everything, which you don't want to do, learn from my mistake don't do that."

"The calming serum, the green one, is basically for someone who has sensitive skin or skin that is acne prone. It has panthenol, which is a skin scaling and skin soothing ingredient, and it's completely water based. So even if you have active acne, you've got acne prone skin, general sensitive skin, you've got rosacea, eczema prone skin, this green one works."

"This particular serum from Beauty of Joseon has Tea Leaf water, probably has some anti-inflammatory compounds in it. It has artemisia extract which is anti-inflammatory, panthenol and glycerin are hydrating, allantoin is anti-inflammatory, Codonopsis root extract is very hydrating, licorice root compound is good for redness and hyperpigmentation, sodium hyaluronate good for hydration. You use two to three drops of serum onto the face, pat gently to help absorb. On the back of my hand it feels really nice and hydrating, no fragrance."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

    Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
