What the gurus are saying

This toner earns praise for its probiotic base and barrier-strengthening formula that provides nourishment beyond basic hydration. It combines prebiotics, ceramides, sodium hyaluronate and amino acids from fermented ingredients to soothe redness and lock in moisture. Shake before use to create bubbles that help ingredients penetrate deeper. It does contain essential oils, which some prefer to avoid.

"I finally finished this toner. I really liked it, it's a bifida based toner that worked well for me, even though it has essential oils. It's hard for me to talk about essential oils because I don't dislike them, but I know some people avoid them."

"The Biome Comforting Infused Toner is a perfect example of a toner that doesn't just hydrate but provides moisturizing ingredients too. It's got their biome blend meaning it's going to strengthen the skin barrier, beet derived prebiotics to help restore moisture to the skin, sodium hyaluronate which is really hydrating, butylene glycol, glycerin, and the saccharomyces fermented filtrate giving us amino acids which are key for our skin, minerals and vitamins that help soothe, moisturize and even brighten and even out the skin tone. Ceramides have also snuck their way into this which is like the key building blocks of our skin barrier. For me a toner is a great way to soothe down irritation and redness with ingredients like cintella asiatica that will soothe your skin whilst calming any inflammation and mugwort extract which is really really good at wound healing, calming and healing any actual inflammation and irritation. You should shake this toner up before using it because it creates these nourishing bubbles that kind of help deliver everything into your skin. I love it, it's just so lightweight again like what I feel a good classic toner should be."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
