What the gurus are saying

The experts who reviewed Avène praise it as a reliable gentle option, particularly for sensitive skin and those managing conditions like acne or using prescription treatments. Dermatologists recommend their cleansers and moisturizers as soothing, effective choices. That said, Avène formulations can vary by region, so people may notice differences in texture or ingredients depending on where they shop, but the overall quality stays consistent.

"If you want something stronger than retinol but you're not ready for a prescription, there are formulations with retinaldehyde, which is a nice middle ground. It sits one conversion step closer to the active form, so it's a little more potent, but it's still often more gentle than prescription tretinoin. There's a really good option from Avène."

"There's also Avène. Avène tends to be less expensive there as well. They're going to have slightly different formulations and ingredients, but overall it's the same brand, so effective formulations. You may notice some differences like the texture, but overall they have some great options as far as what's available there."

"When it comes to figuring out what gentle products to use during and after accutane, my favorite skincare brands to use [...] are Cetaphil, Cerave, Vanicream, La Roche Posay, and Avène. These brands make great moisturizers as well as gentle cleansers. I wouldn't look for any kind of exfoliating cleanser, just stick with gentle soothing cleansers."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
