  • White cast on deeper skin tones
  • Doesn't set down fully, transfers onto clothes
  • Tinted shade too warm and dark for some

What the gurus are saying

This mineral sunscreen earns praise for its unusually lightweight, fluid texture that spreads far more easily than typical thick mineral formulas, making it genuinely comfortable for sensitive and rosacea-prone skin. Multiple experts highlight the high iron oxide concentration, which blends better across deeper skin tones than most tinted mineral sunscreens and may offer added antioxidant protection. However, one reviewer found it leaves a white cast on deeper skin and never fully dries, transferring onto clothes and other surfaces, though she used it untinted while others tested the tinted version.

"For very sensitive, reactive, or rosacea-prone skin that doesn't do well with chemical filters, this is a genuinely comfortable option and the SPF 50 gives you really solid protection. The one caveat is the usual mineral sunscreen issue, on deeper skin tones it can leave a slight white cast. The key ingredients are zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, and Avène Thermal Spring Water."

"This is a tinted runny liquid that feels like a lightweight lotion. It rubs in easily, but it only comes in one shade, which is way too warm and too dark for me. And it goes on very splotchy and very unevenly. [...] But aside from the color, the other reason that I can't recommend this one is because it never dries back after 20 minutes. It is just coming off on everything. So, this one got a zero out of five for me as a standalone sunscreen."

"They have a mineral sunscreen that is a nice option. [...] The solar UV SPF 50 is a nice lightweight fluid mineral sunscreen but it does leave a white cast."

Vlog: NEW AVENE SUNSCREEN 🌞 COSTCO SKIN CARE 🛍SHOPPING @DrDrayzday
"The Avene mineral sunscreens available in the US are nice, especially their tinted version which has a lovely liquid consistency and their compact which is really great, but they only offer one shade of the liquid and one shade of the compact so the color options don't work for everyone, and their non-tinted mineral sunscreen leaves a white cast."

"The Avène Mineral Sunscreen Liquid Tinted has a high iron oxide concentration in it, so it's amazing for melasma. If you have hyperpigmentation or melasma prone skin, the darker the sunscreen the better protection you get. I actually love to recommend tinted sunscreens to my melasma prone patients."

"My number one pick hands down is Avène Solaire UV Mineral Multi Defense Tinted SPF 50. I'm recommending this for very specific scientific reasons in addition to it being a very cosmetically elegant product that just feels great on the skin. [...] What stands out the most about this compared to all the others is the placement of iron oxides which is much higher up on the ingredients list."

"Avene Solaire UV mineral tinted sunscreen has zinc oxide as the UV filter and iron oxides as the tinted protection from visible light, making it a good option if you want to avoid titanium dioxide."
