    What the gurus are saying

This balm impresses dermatologists for staying thick and protective without feeling greasy, thanks to its colloidal oatmeal, ceramides, and petrolatum blend. The oat complex calms irritation and flaky patches, making it a go-to for eczema, sensitivity, and overdone skin care routines. It works well on both face and hands, and some keep it handy for whenever localized irritation flares up.

"There are a lot of moisturizer formulas that include petrolatum but don't have that super thick, heavy, greasy feel. [...] One that I love is the Aveeno Calm + Restore Therapy Balm. It does include petrolatum, but it also has colloidal oatmeal and ceramides to help boost the strength of the skin."

"Sunscreens, especially the water resistant ones, can kind of double as a skin protectant. This one from Aveeno, the Calm + Restore Skin Therapy Balm, works well on the face, actually I use it as a hand cream."

    DECEMBER 2022 MONTHLY FAVORITES & FAILS 😍 @DrDrayzday
"This has been a favorite hand cream for me and I've been buzzing through it. [...] It has colloidal oatmeal, which is a skin protectant, avenanthramides, which are antioxidants, [...] glycerin, and [...] ceramide, which is helpful for the skin barrier. [...] I've been using it a lot as a hand moisturizer, but it's also really good [...] on the face [...] if you've got patches of irritation or flaky skin."

I TRIED THE NEW AVEENO CALM & RESTORE PRODUCTS 🤔 @DrDrayzday
"It's a wonderful product to use if you are experiencing localized skin irritation, whether related to eczema or if you overdid it with skincare, the colloidal oatmeal is really helpful for that. I've comfortably used this on the face with no issue, it's wonderful. [...] It's not greasy, which is one thing I really like about it, even though it has petrolatum in it. [...] This would be a great one to throw in your bag if you're prone to dry hands too."

"Back to the OG, my favorite: Aveeno Calm and Restore. This is their Skin Therapy Balm, not their gel moisturizer. It has ceramides NP, which is the water-loving one, in addition to the triple oat formula with oat extract, colloidal oatmeal, and oat oil, and it's great for irritated itchy skin. It is a thick, thick balm. I mean you can literally build the Eiffel Tower out of this. Really thick, super thick. [...] I love this for patients with eczema. I like it for crepey necks."
Top Pick: ceramide balm for eczema

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.

    Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
