What the gurus are saying

This sunscreen earns dermatologist praise for being both effective at protecting lips and offering good value. The main thing to keep in mind: it contains beeswax, so anyone with beeswax sensitivity should patch-test first or look for an alternative.

"[Aquaphor] has made a good lip protecting sunscreen that my MAS like to use"
~Yay
"Aquaphor has one that is like in a petrolatum base I think it's like Aquaphor with chemical sunscreen so that's really nice"
~Yay
"For my lips I use Aquaphor with SPF, is it like 25 or 30 I can't remember, but you gotta reapply."
~Nay
"To me, that's a compelling reason not to use oxybenzone. If you [...] had to suspect why these people are suddenly getting their lips exploding and then getting peeling and itchiness on the lips, it's because of the oxybenzone and not because of the underlying base of Aquaphor. [...] I'm at a point where I'm going to tell people not to purchase this product. Don't buy this lip SPF from Aquaphor. This is not the best product you should be using to protect your lips in the sun."
~Yay
"I rather enjoyed this Aquaphor Lip Repair Stick Plus Sunscreen. It's a little stiff to apply and not the most moisturizing thing, but for a chemical lip SPF it did not cause lip irritation for me, and I leaned into this quite heavily. You get a two pack at Target for 7.69. One interesting thing [...] is there's no lanolin in it, unlike Aquaphor Healing Ointment, which has lanolin, an allergen for some people. [...] This one has sunflower seed oil, shea butter, and jojoba seed oil instead."

"This is okay but it's kind of stiff"
SPF LIP BALMS YOU NEED TO TRY 👄 Dermatologist @DrDrayzday
"I liked it okay and finished the tube, but it's not the best of all of these by any means, it's just a good, easy to find option. What I didn't care for is that it's stiff, so it takes a little effort to apply. [...] It's a clear, colorless chemical sunscreen that's actually decently moisturizing once it's on, but if you're sensitive to chemical sunscreens you won't want to wear this, and it's not water resistant, which I wish it were."

SUNSCREENS I HAVE BEEN LOVING & USED UP 😍 @DrDrayzday
"Aquaphor is a great product in general for the lips, so I decided to give a go to their Lip Repair Stick Plus Sunscreen. I bought this on iHerb. I have actually come to really like this, it's not a holy grail lip SPF, but it worked out really well for me this past winter. It's a chemical lip SPF, so because of that you may find it irritating, chemical sunscreens [...] on the lips can be irritating for some people, so be aware of that, but for me I was actually able to tolerate it pretty well."

"This sunscreen for the lips from Aquaphor is a pretty good deal, it's nice, I'm currently using it myself."
*Vlog* Pimple patches, Costco pajama sets, and Aquaphor SPF lip balm @DrDrayzday
"I've used this one in the past, the Aquaphor SPF lip balm. I like it, for me it can get a little on the drying side though, and I've always attributed that to the fact that this is a chemical sunscreen."
NEW WINTER SKINCARE AT TARGET 🛍 Dermatologist @DrDrayzday
"I like this Aquaphor Lip Repair Stick Plus Sunscreen, it's a chemical sunscreen and it's actually pretty moisturizing for the lips. [...] But it is a little stiff and it's not super moisturizing, you have to do a couple of passes on your lips to feel like you have a good layer on there. Otherwise it's okay, though some people's lips are more sensitive to chemical filters, which is why I like mineral sunscreen myself."
*Vlog* SKINCARE THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE @DrDrayzday
"This is a good one from Aquaphor, it's a chemical SPF but it's pretty moisturizing. It has shea butter, castor seed oil, and sunflower seed oil, nice and moisturizing."

"The lip balm is really good. As a side note, they have an SPF lip balm that's fragrance free that's really good too. It is a chemical sunscreen, so some of the ingredients may be irritating to you, but it's otherwise very good."

"This would make a great stocking stuffer, it's a chemical sunscreen, it doesn't have any fragrance or anything, it's decently moisturizing, give it a try."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
