What the gurus are saying

This cleanser splits reviewers sharply. One expert found it left her face tight and red, cautioning that anyone with sensitive skin should skip it and questioning the value of niacinamide in a cleanser at all. Another loved it and plans to make it a summer staple. Not much consensus yet, so there is not much to go on so far.

"My face felt super tight and red after washing, so if you have sensitive skin, stay far away. Honestly, what's the point of niacinamide in a cleanser? A good cleanser should just cleanse your face without drying it out. The scent is bubblegummy, the texture is weird, and you only need about ten percent of the amount they show on TikTok. This is one of the worst cleansers I've tried recently."

"I think this is wonderful if there's someone in your life that's experimented with skincare, they want to buy their first skincare product but you don't want to go for something that's going to trash their skin. Super gentle yet actually effective and visually appealing. This ticks every box. I love it. Super inexpensive too. I'm going to experiment a lot more with April Skin because I just love love love this product and I think this is going to be my summer go-to when it comes to cleansers."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it can get into a pore rather than just working on the surface. That is why it has long-standing evidence for blackheads and milder acne.

Tranexamic acid

Tranexamic acid has a growing body of clinical evidence for melasma and the stubborn patches of pigment that other ingredients struggle with.
