  • Not occlusive enough for very dry skin

What the gurus are saying

This cream earns praise for its lightweight texture that hydrates without feeling occlusive, making it particularly appealing for oily and combination skin types. The ceramides, panthenol, and Centella work together for soothing nourishment and a calming effect. Those with dry or mature skin may find it less protective than heavier barrier creams if intensive barrier healing is their main goal.

"I do love this by Anua. It's 3 plus ceramides. It's a barrier cream. So after I put on that retinoid, remember we put this on before the retinoid. Now I can sandwich that on my neck. When you press it into your skin, even when we're this many layers out, you can feel that little prickly sensation of the retinol."

"I'm loving this one, an Anua ceramide moisturizer barrier cream, as my nightly protection step."

"This cream has some fatty acid content and Centella, which is a great anti-inflammatory ingredient, very soothing, particularly good for red and inflamed skin or irritated skin. And then there's some panthenol in here for hydration. This cream is very light with a good kiss of moisture to it, a lot of hydration. I do enjoy this cream and I really recommend it. That said, while it has all those good barrier supportive ingredients and that nice hydrating panthenol, texture-wise and protective feeling-wise for my skin, it's just not enough. It's much thinner, lighter, with very little [occlusivity]. I find so many barrier creams that will truly heal your skin and soothe not only your symptoms of dehydration but also help to heal your skin barrier tend to be a lot more dense and heavy and very occlusive, which might feel suffocating for more oily skin types. This one is lighter, which is why I like it and recommend it, just why I don't use it myself."

Nourishing Moisturizers for Fall! 🍂
"This is going to be great for folks with an oily skin type, a balanced skin type, those with a more traditionally combo skin type, but this is also great for folks with some dehydrated skin as well because this is really focused on the moisture barrier. Ingredients wise, we do have three different types of ceramides and they are encapsulated and that really helps to keep those lipids really nice and fresh for the skin so that they can really help to strengthen up your skin barrier. And then they are also using Centella for soothing as well as panthenol for a hydrating effect. I am recommending this for folks who are dealing with a little bit more oil on their skin or who don't like really heavy dense creams but might be struggling with some dehydration."

"This is the Anua 3 Ceramide Panthenol moisturizer barrier cream. So this is what I use on the days when I'm using my tretinoin. If I have exfoliated I use something a little bit more moisturizing. That's what I use. And it's just really great. I love it. What I love about this in terms of barrier creams is most of the time they're very very heavy. And this isn't, it's not super heavy. It is very moisturizing but it has a more lightweight feel on the skin. So if you're someone who's congestion prone or if you just don't like to feel super oily, this is really, really, really good. And sometimes if I have gone in a little bit too much with my exfoliation, I'll use it in the daytime and it doesn't feel like it's sitting on top of my skin and I can actually apply my sunscreen. Sometimes when you use a more moisturizing moisturizer, it just feels like it sits on top of your skin and then when you go in with your sunscreen, they mix together and you're just kind of messing everything up. So yeah, really good. I've already repurchased this and I will be repurchasing this for the foreseeable future."

"This is a nice calming and very, very moisturizing cream. I love it because it's not so oily. If you're congestion prone, you don't want something that's going to be way too heavy, but it's still really moisturizing. I needed this when I was in New York and it was so dry. It was like these thin milks were not enough."

"This one is pretty good. If you have oily combo skin I think you would like this one more, but since my skin is more dry and mature, I personally like VT capsule cream better."

"This barrier cream combines ectoin with ceramides, panthenol, and hyaluronic acid. All excellent ingredients for the skin barrier. It's fragrance-free. It's rich. It's thick. It has a very elegant, sophisticated texture. It feels nourishing and calming. A downside to this product is that it is a richer texture, so one of those to lean into as the final step in your nighttime skincare routine. It can feel a bit rich, however, under makeup or under sunscreen. It might lead to sunscreen peeling. And if you don't like heavier products on your face or you find that they make you get a little flushed easily, then this would be one to stay away from."

The Best Moisturizers For Sensitive Skin 2025
"It's got ceramides as well as hyaluronic acid and a variety of amino acids which really help with moisture retention. Amino acids are naturally found in your skin barrier and help with retaining water. And it has panthenol. Based on just reading the ingredients and on having a good experience with their serums, I was like, 'Oh, I need to try this.' And I have not been disappointed with this at all. This one feels a lot more hydrating. You almost feel like you're getting a little burst of hydration, sort of towing the line of a gel cream. Gels often have that hydrating burstlike feel whereas creams are more like a shieldlike feel. This feels a bit more like a gel cream, but it is also a rich, thick cream. So you kind of get the best of both worlds. If you have oily skin, you would like this. It does not end up feeling oily on the skin or oppressive. It's a great option. I've really enjoyed it."

"This is another one you could use as the top coat in a moisture sandwich, the Anua ceramide plus panthenol. It has ectoin in it, which is an ingredient that shows promise for helping to defend against pollution. This product has more of a hydrating feel compared to some of the others I reviewed. It also works great as an eye cream, and to moisturize the skin around the eyelids, it's great."
Yay
"Look at this ingredients list, it has ceramide ingredients in it plus some of those more synthetic ceramides, it's even got the lanolin alternative in it, and it's a huge tube. This is a moisture barrier cream for sensitive skin, and K-beauty is really coming through for dry skin lately. It's actually for dry skin but it's not super heavy, I really thought this was going to be exclusively for nighttime use, but it could work for day or night. That's going to be a big thumbs up for me."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.

Source: DermNet

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
