What the gurus are saying

Gurus split on this product. Long-term fans swear by its exfoliating power for dull, crepey skin with fine lines, praising its hydrating occlusive base and noting the recent pump addition as a practical improvement; initial tingling is normal. One reviewer found it ineffective, reporting it sat tacky on skin without delivering moisture or visible results, suggesting glycolic acid may not work for all body types. Price point is consistently cited as a strength.

"I've been using this for 9 years. This is Alpha Skin Care's Renewal Body Lotion. This one has 12% glycolic acid and it's formulated at a pH of four. Glycolic acid helps your skin in three different ways: it helps with collagen production, it helps with skin cell turnover on the surface, it actually dissolves the glue that holds dead skin cells on the surface so it'll immediately make your skin look better, and third it's very hydrating to the skin, it helps to lock water into the skin. It's about $15 to $20 for this big tube. The best thing that happened to it in the last couple years is that they finally put a pump on it because this is so thick that it really was hard to get out of the bottle. This contains petrolatum, mineral oil, and dimethicone, so it's very thick, it's very occlusive, but it makes my skin feel so nourished and so hydrated. This one though is a little bit spicy. When I first started using it I would get a little bit tingly when I would put it on."

"The glycolic acid is actually a low enough pH to exfoliate your skin, so if your skin looks a little bit dull and a little bit crepey and is showing a lot of fine lines and wrinkles, this is what will really help to get rid of that by turning over those dead skin cells faster. It helps your skin to be less itchy and less dry and just looks a lot better in general. This has been a holy grail for so many years I can't even tell you, and I of course have purchased a new one, have it in my bathroom, and am using it. I used it today after my shower. I love how it makes my skin look and feel."

"This is a glycolic acid body lotion that I absolutely love, swear by. I've been talking about it for years. It's such a great lotion, but it's so thick that you can barely get it out of the container. So the big news about it is that I ordered a new one and they included a pump. I didn't even realize it was coming. I was like I squealed when I opened the box."

"I recommend people start bringing a glycolic acid based body lotion into their routine. Glycolic acid helps the skin hold on to water, it's gently exfoliating, and it helps stimulate more collagen, so if you have that crepy texture it's going to help with that as well. One of my most common recommendations for this is the Alpha Renewal Body Lotion. It has 12% glycolic acid. It's quite comfortable when you apply it, sometimes glycolic acid is really spicy and tingly and it doesn't really do that, and it's really effective."

"I did not like their renewal body lotion. This is an exfoliating body lotion. It just didn't do anything. It went on my skin, it layered up, and it just kind of sat there and it was tacky, didn't dry down well. I really don't feel like my legs were moisturized afterward any more than they were before. I committed to it and used the entire bottle because there was a recommendation from you guys for this. It does have AHAs in it. I believe it's a glycolic-based exfoliating lotion. Maybe my body does not like glycolic. It's so budget friendly, so if this works for you, go for it. It just didn't work for me personally."
