What they liked

  • Subtle, buildable tan without orange cast
  • Chemical sunscreen that does not sting
  • Two-in-one SPF 50 and self-tanner

What they flagged

  • Easy to overuse and look overly orange
  • Requires careful pacing to find right frequency

What the gurus are saying

The self-tanner builds a natural-looking tan without the typical chemical smell, though overuse risks an overly orange cast, so pacing it to once or twice weekly helps find your right rate. Chemical sunscreen ingredients in the formula did not irritate skin in testing, and the addition of vitamin C, green tea, chamomile and centella asiatica brings calming and antioxidant support alongside the SPF 50 broad-spectrum protection and water resistance up to 80 minutes.

The Question That Made Me Blush… (Q&A Time!)
"I got this new product very recently from Allies of Skin. This is actually an SPF 50 but it is a self-tanner. My understanding is this is to be used like three days in a row, use it as your regular SPF, and what happens is after the third or fourth day you start to get that natural glow. The only reason I haven't used it yet is I got this when I was down in London with them a couple of months ago, but I didn't want to try anything on the road up to my wedding that could have any negative impacts or not what I wanted. So I haven't used it yet."
10 Things I'm Loving Right Now (Even the Stuff I Hated)
"This is a two-in-one product like nothing else I've used. It gives stellar SPF protection and it slowly tans the face over time. This has strangely been a lifesaver for my summer face, which is a few shades lighter than my body. I'm telling you, this stuff works, and the scent alone is worth the wear. I am obsessed and I can genuinely see myself using this straight through the rest of the year. This solves the problem that SPF 50 on the face and not the body creates. I will never use fake tan, but I will use this. It's an SPF that gives me really good protection and then it just subtly gives me this sun-kissed face. I'm just finishing up my first bottle after the sample and I have another one in reserve. This is here to stay."

"Allies of Skin has launched their Sunless Tan SPF 50 Daily Self-Tanner which is a chemical sunscreen with DHA which is the classic ingredient found in self-tanners but you're not going to smell like a lab mouse when you use this and it's going to build a beautiful coverage slowly over time. It retails for $59. But the only thing I want to tell you guys about this is beware that if you overuse this product, you might end up looking like an Oompa Loompa, really, really orange. So you got to kind of pace yourselves and figure out what is the right rate for you to use this product. I'm guessing it's probably going to be once or twice a week."

"This is Allies of Skin Sunless Tan SPF 50. I like to do a little fake tan in summer just to get a little color to the complexion. This is what I've been using for the past 3 days. It gives just the nicest glow and just a touch of tan without looking Oompa Loompa orange, which let's be honest is no one's friend. I genuinely been impressed with this and it's gradual. The key reason I think this is special though is it's an SPF 50. So it's a sunscreen and a sunless tanner all in one. I would recommend using this as your sunscreen for 3 or 4 days till you build up that coloration that you want and then switch back to a regular sunscreen. You get such a nice natural glow with this. I think it's just really nice to have a self-tanner that actually has an SPF 50. None of that SPF 6 car oil stuff that we used to apply. SPF 50 actually works and gives you a really nice glow."

"This one actually from Allies of Skin is quite nice. [...] This product does not cause irritation for me, which is really weird because mostly all chemical-based sunscreens irritate my skin. [...] I like this one a lot because it has a built-in self-tanner at the same time. So it's very unique. This is the Sunless Tan SPF 50 Daily Self-Tanner. And this one has vitamin C, green tea, chamomile, licorice fruit extract, santalum album. So a lot of great skin ingredients in there to calm the skin, to keep the skin hydrated as well. And it is a broad-spectrum SPF 50 with a PA++++, which is really good. And it's water and sweat resistant up to 80 minutes. This does contain chemical-based sunscreen ingredients, but I think this is a nice one if you want that built-in self-tanner and it doesn't give you orange looking skin. It's actually very realistic. So if you want something to give your skin a little bit more color, use this on an everyday basis to keep up with it to build up that tan or just use it every other day just to maintain the tan shade that you desire."

"This is the Sunless Tan SPF 50 Daily Self-Tanner. Sometimes self-tanners can look too orange or look different and don't always look natural, but this one actually builds up to quite a natural looking tan. And I was actually really impressed with that. And this one also has a built-in sunscreen. The only thing here for me is that this does contain a chemical-based ingredient list for sunscreen, and I usually don't use chemical-based sunscreens because they irritate my skin and I get a burning sensation and get quite rosy. But [...] I did not experience that burning sensation with this at all, and my face did not get rosy either. So that was quite interesting because I usually don't like chemical formulations. [...] This also has vitamin C, green tea, chamomile, licorice root extract, as well as goji and centella asiatica, so very brightening with antioxidant support and it's also very calming and hydrating. It is a broad spectrum SPF 50 with PA+++++."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.
