What the gurus are saying

Gurus agree Botox is safe, predictable, and a good entry point for cosmetic treatments with low downtime and reversibility. The major gripe is misaligned expectations: it smooths active wrinkles formed by facial movement but does not erase existing static wrinkles or wrinkles already set into skin, a distinction many patients don't understand before spending $600-800 per session. One reviewer contests the 'preventive' marketing claim as overstated and profit-driven. Caution surfaces around heavy repeated dosing, which may cause muscle atrophy or compensatory facial changes over time.

"I find that the claim that it's preventive I mean it makes some sense right like you're creasing those areas of the skin loss but I find that claim to be mostly being made by people trying to sell Botox to twentysomes. So, I find it a little sus and I don't appreciate the claim because it's misleading to say that something does something when we don't have any evidence for it, especially if you're turning a profit for that."

"I also use a bunch of Botox just because it is safe, it's trusted, everyone knows the name, and it's predictable. With the neurotoxin taking 2 to 3 weeks to settle in, there's a two to 3 week gray area of things that could happen to any given patient at any given time. During those two to 3 weeks, you might experience some asymmetries just because the Botox takes to certain muscles better than others. Don't freak out. It is normal. We can touch that up in two to three weeks."

"Botox was mostly injected for treatment of movement disorders, particularly like eye movement disorders, and ophthalmologists at that time observed that when they injected Botox around the eye, it helped with their wrinkles like the wrinkles lessened and disappeared, and that is what led to 2002 FDA approval of the use of Botox for cosmetic use. Botox being really the original that's owned by Allergan, it's really become like the household name that we just think about and throw it out there, but just understand that Botox itself is actually a brand."

"Botox can be very helpful for treating dynamic lines and it's very quick to do, low risk, low downtime, and it's temporary so at the end of the day if you don't like it once it wears off you don't ever have to get it again. I definitely recommend Botox for those who are entertaining and wanting to start aesthetic treatments and improving their facial aging but maybe don't want to invest or are not ready for the bigger stuff like fillers or lasers. Botox can be a great place to start. Just be careful because if you get regular Botox with really heavy doses of it, it could potentially lead to muscle atrophy because you're not using those muscles, which can certainly impact how your face ages, or it can cause overactivity of other muscles that you're not treating and lead to less desired outcomes."

"Botox will not get rid of your wrinkles. People associate Botox with wrinkle reduction, and when they find out that Botox does not actually remove existing wrinkles, they feel jipped out of their money, $600 to $800 per injection every 3 to 6 months. But any good Botox injector should be telling you this. Botox will not get rid of your existing wrinkles."

Any good Botox injector should be telling you this. Botox will not get rid of your existing wrinkles. There are two main types of wrinkles: static wrinkles and dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles are the ones that happen when we smile or we emote. Those dynamic wrinkles are always going to be there, but for some people they end up getting static wrinkles."

"Botox does not actually remove existing wrinkles. People associate Botox with wrinkle reduction and when they find out that Botox does not actually remove existing wrinkles they feel jipped out of their money, 600 to 800 dollars per injection every 3 to 6 months. No Botox will not get rid of your existing wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles are the ones that happen when we smile or we emote. These dynamic wrinkles are always going to be there, but for some people they end up getting static wrinkles. Static wrinkles are the fine lines, the wrinkles that have set in. It's dynamic wrinkles that over time keep on folding into the skin that cause those static wrinkles that always stay."

"Injecting Botox into the skin is not going to reverse existing wrinkles. It might make them appear less severe because we're no longer folding the skin, but if you already have static wrinkles in the skin it's not going to get rid of the ones that already exist. It might stop you from being able to form dynamic wrinkles and it's going to prevent new wrinkles from forming so that you don't get more, but if you already have existing wrinkles you need to work with ingredients that are going to stimulate the collagen and elastin in your skin. Botox prevents a wrinkle from setting in or prevents you from making a smile or making a face that causes a wrinkle down the line to happen."
