What the gurus are saying

This sunscreen divides reviewers on whether its premium price tag and glowy finish justify its limitations. Some praise how it looks on skin without needing foundation over top, though one expert flagged that the zinc content runs lower than ideal for reliable UVA protection. Others found the tint turned orange, experienced peeling and pilling no matter their prep, and felt the forty-minute water resistance and SPF 36 don't earn the sixty-to-eighty-dollar cost. The packaging also tends to leak, which adds to the frustration for those unimpressed.

"The Alastin HydraTint Pro is almost $80 for a sunscreen, but people rave about the finish of it that it's glowy but not too greasy. And for a lot of people, it also has that perfect tint where it blends well with their skin tone. So it also doubles for them as makeup. It just checks so many boxes in one product."

"I love how it looks, but I'm just not sure about the UVA coverage. And I gave it a three out of five under makeup."

"I'm wearing it today as my base, as my foundation, and I've been reaching for it a lot lately. That said, I'm not 100% sold on it. I really like how this one looks on my skin and I like it that I don't have to use foundation over it because it isn't sheer. It's tinted and it's got a pigment in it and the pigment is really pigmented. You put it on and it is like putting on makeup. You can put makeup on over it and it works great with other makeup, but it's beautiful on its own too. The finish on it is slightly dark for me, but it definitely gives me that sun-kissed, tannish glow. And it's very pretty and it lasts all day. I love the finish on it. I love how it looks on my skin. I love how it plays with makeup. My only problem with it is the amount of zinc in it. It's a little low for me, but it's not super low. It's 3.4%. This one also does contain titanium dioxide which mainly covers UVB and half the UVA spectrum. And the zinc really is there to do double duty on one half of the UVA spectrum and then it's the only thing in there for the other half of the UVA spectrum. So it's not like you're not getting any UVA protection. You are getting some, but it's not as robust as it might be if it had more zinc."

"The Elastin Hydra Tint sunscreen was not a win for me whatsoever. It's sixty dollars for an SPF 36 sunscreen, water resistant forty minutes, a daily facial moisturizer with a tint. The tint was orange for me, very orange. The product peeled no matter what I did and I got a lot of pilling. I do not see that the price point justifies the product. It was an epic fail for me."

"I reviewed the Elastin Hydrotint, a tinted mineral sunscreen I've gotten a lot of requests to review. I finally gave it a go, and maybe I'm getting too snobby when it comes to tinted sunscreens, but for the price point I was kind of underwhelmed. I gave it like a three out of five, not bad, but I don't know, not worth it in my opinion. One thing I didn't care for about the Elastin product too is the packaging kind of leaks all over the place, and that's annoying."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
