What the gurus are saying

Gurus consistently praise adapalene as an underrated, accessible, and well-tolerated over-the-counter retinoid option. It delivers measurable results for both acne and anti-aging concerns, though it works more gently and slowly than stronger prescription retinoids like tretinoin. The main drawback is that some find the gel formulation greasy; switching to cream form can help. A few reviewers note that stubborn acne may require higher-strength formulations or alternatives, and tolerability varies for those with rosacea.

"Adapylene that you're buying in the store is what you get. It doesn't matter if you're buying different gel or La Roche Posay's adapylene or Neutrogena's adapylene. It doesn't matter. It's the same Adapylene 0.1% gel. Some people don't like the gel. They find it makes them look greasy, shiny. I have used adapene over the counter myself for improving the visible signs of skin aging. I've used it for a long period of time before starting on tretinoin, and I saw great results with it. So I think it's an excellent and underrated option as far as what you can buy without a prescription that you can feel pretty confident is at least doing something for you. Alternatively, if you are dealing with acne, adapylene is also a great option for you. Keep in mind, adapylene sold over the counter is just the 0.1% formulation. Some people's acne is very stubborn and they might require a higher percentage or they might be doing better with tretinoin or they might do better with tarotene."

Do Retinoids Cause Skin Darkening? Dermatologist Explains
"Adapalene can certainly help improve post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and sunspots, including sunspots on the back of the hands. While it may not work as quickly, as efficiently, or as effectively in some cases as tretinoin or perhaps even tretinoin for unwanted pigmentation, it tends to be a lot easier to tolerate, a lot less irritating, which is a nice balance. If it's less likely to cause irritation, less likely to cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, an individual might actually end up getting better results."

Fix Your Crepey Skin With These Easy Tips!
"adapalene is FDA approved for acne but can have impacts on collagen production. I often tell people who have crepy skin, say on the backs of their hands, that adapalene can be used there to improve the visible signs of skin aging and improve collagen production to larger surfaces."
Dermatologist Q&A: Hormonal Acne, Adapalene & Over-Moisturizing
"Adapalene is kind of underrated. It definitely has been shown to work. It definitely is helpful. In the United States specifically, it's very accessible. You can walk into Walmart and pick it up. It's pretty inexpensive. And in comparison to tretinoin, it's a lot easier to tolerate. I think a lot of people who can't get tretinoin forget about adapalene and go straight to a cosmetic, which cosmetics are slower to work than adapalene. They may be less irritating, but they are slower to work."

It's pretty inexpensive. And in comparison to tretinoin, it's a lot easier to tolerate. I think adapalene gets slept on because it's marketed for acne as it should be, but I think it's slept on. I started using adapalene years ago when it first became available over the counter. That was the first retinoid that I ever used. After about eight or nine months, I really started to notice an improvement not only in sunspots on my face but I noticed an improvement in firmness and plumpness of the skin and decrease in little fine lines for sure."
5 Rosacea Remedies THAT WORK | Dermatologist Tips
"A topical retinoid like adapalene can really help get rid of, calm down and prevent those little bumps of rosacea, and with ongoing use can actually help augment barrier function. But initially, topical retinoids can be tough to tolerate for rosacea, so using a moisturizer along with a topical retinoid is a game changer in helping you tolerate it better."
Tretinoin Causes Death & Is Banned?
"Adapalene is substantially less irritating compared to tretinoin. These newer retinoids have better specificity and selectivity for certain receptors in the skin, which is part of why they are less irritating. They all work to improve skin cell turnover, but some of them are more specific in terms of the receptors, and for that reason they are less irritating."
*BEST* Skincare For Scars: Dermatologist's Picks
"A topical retinoid can go a long way for a variety of these issues, the redness, the dark spots, the thick and raised scars, and the indented depressed scars. Adapalene is an acne treatment, it's a retinoid. If you have acne that can scar over time, this can help soften and smooth the surface of the scar. Topical retinoids such as adapalene also can improve collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin, so if you have a depressed scar, that can help subtly soften it a bit and plump the skin. It will not get rid of those, but it can over time with consistent use improve the appearance. Plus, if your scarring is due to acne, this will help control and prevent future breakouts. Adapalene also is going to be helpful for hyperpigmentation, it helps slow down the pigment-producing process and helps lift up the hyperpigmentation out of the skin. Plus it's anti-inflammatory."
HOW SAFE IS RETINOL IN PREGNANCY? Dermatologist @DrDrayzday
"Adapalene is a retinoid that is mostly used to treat acne but it can be beneficial for some other skin conditions. In contrast to tretinoin, you can buy adapalene without a prescription, it's an over-the-counter medication, at least here in the United States. Adapalene is absorbed when applied to the skin to an even lesser extent, almost very negligible, so the risk of absorption is even less. In animal studies where they applied adapalene at very high doses far exceeding what you would presumably apply to the skin yourself, there actually was no evidence of fetal malformations, and there are no human reports of fetal harm, fetal malformations, or adverse pregnancy outcomes in women exposed to topical adapalene. But it is a retinoid and it still gives us pause, and by and large it is not recommended during pregnancy, although on a case-by-case basis in certain skin conditions your doctor may deem that the benefits outweigh any theoretical risk."
Acne-Prone Skin: The Ultimate Guide To Products
"Adapalene is arguably the best, best over-the-counter FDA approved acne treatment option available. It's a retinoid, and retinoids are a game changer and a staple when it comes to clearing up and preventing acne breakouts. Retinoids help to normalize skin cell turnover, reducing the pore clogging issue. Adapalene is well established to also have anti-inflammatory properties that make it an effective retinoid for acne. Of all the topical retinoids, historically it was one of the most well tolerated, although now we have newer generations of topical retinoids that are super gentle as well. Adapalene is also amazing for those post-acne marks, the dark marks. The thing about adapalene is it does not work as a spot treatment. You don't want to just put it on a pimple when it pops up and hope that it does anything."

"Adapalene, which you can get over the counter, has not only been shown to help improve the look of aging skin on the backs of hands, but it's been shown to lighten age spots back there and it does improve collagen production."

"Adapalene 0.1% gel is FDA approved for the treatment of acne and you can use it not only for acne but it's also helpful for sort of anti-aging purposes. It can improve the appearance of sunspots and may improve collagen production. For acne it's great obviously, and for post acne marks it's good for hyperpigmentation."
How To Get Rid Of Rosacea | Dermatologist Tips
"Adapalene is FDA approved for acne and may also help rosacea by helping to clear up the little pimple-like bumps. Not everyone tolerates adapalene, especially people who have rosacea, but of the retinoids it is one of the easiest to tolerate. And if you tolerate it, it definitely may help to improve your rosacea. Adapalene also has some anti-inflammatory properties to it, and it may also help your skin enhance the damaging effects of UV when paired with sunscreen, so it really has a potential to work in your favor if you're able to tolerate it."

"This is adapalene, which is a phenomenal retinoid, particularly for acne prone skin. This is in its gel form. You can actually get this in a cream form. Very similar price point. The cream version of any retinoid is generally going to be more hydrating than a gel version. So if you're using a gel adapalene, opt for a cream version. These are just really quick wins to help get a little extra hydration, minimize the risk of any irritation."

"My favorite one in this category is going to be Adapalene 0.1% Gel. Applying this to your entire face at bedtime will help exfoliate the top layer of the skin cells so those pores have opportunity to empty out and not become clogged. This will help treat your acne in addition to cleaning out the pores. It will also help stimulate collagen production causing tightening of the skin, therefore pores appear smaller."

How To Clear Acne: Best Nighttime Skincare Products for Acne 🙌
"The gold standard in treatment of acne is topical retinoid, so these are things like retinol, retinal, tretinoin, or adapalene. Adapalene 0.1% gel used to be prescription and now it's over the counter. This type of retinoid works in acne receptors, they're specific to acne, not so much aging, but specifically to acne. While we typically recommend retinoids be used in the evening, adapalene gel is an exception because you can use it twice a day. After you've washed your face, dried it completely, applied your pimple patches to spot treat your active lesions, you are going to apply your adapalene gel next. A pea-size amount of adapalene gel is plenty to cover your entire face, and once you've applied it, you can moisturize on top of it. I would allow it to completely dry, this can take anywhere from one to two minutes. I can actually use it twice a day even in the morning with no increased oiliness whatsoever."

"adapalene is the third generation of retinoid, amazing for acne. Your acne will get worse first because acne sometimes is underneath the skin, so you have to let that come up. Your acne might get worse when you're treating acne, but get through it, just keep plowing through it, your skin will be so much better. Differ Gel adapalene is super inexpensive, it's less than 20 bucks, you don't need a prescription, and it's made for sensitive skin."

"Retinoids are light sensitive so you shouldn't necessarily use them during the day, but there are some forms of retinoids that are photo stable like Adapalene gel that you can use during the day. With retinoids you may go through a period called retinization, which is basically when your skin cells are turning over and that time period is going from 45 or 35 days down to 28 or 25. You can bet that your skin is going to be a little bit red and irritated. In order to avoid that you want to titrate, so literally ask your prescribing physician how many times you should apply this per week. You start low, you go slow, you use just a little bit, and instead of putting it directly on the skin you can actually put a moisturizer on first and then put your prescription strength retinoid on top of that, and that kind of slows down its absorption into the skin and prevents it from being as irritating. Retinoids love water so if you apply it to damp skin it's going to penetrate but that also means it can burn. For most people you're not going to want to do that, so make sure that you're applying to dry skin or put a moisturizer on first."

"If you want the best over-the-counter acne retinoid to treat and prevent active acne bumps, adapalene 0.1% gel is the one to buy. Adapalene is the form of retinoid that is an FDA approved medication proven to treat acne and it is the gold standard for over-the-counter treatments. This used to be available by prescription only but now you can get it over the counter at least in the United States. Adapalene is a topical derivative of vitamin A, which is the class of medications most effective at treating acne topically. This works to clear your skin in a few different ways. Number one, it clears out your pores."
