What the gurus are saying

Gurus are skeptical about Abreva's real-world payoff. The main complaint is that it demands five daily applications to deliver only marginal results, typically shortening cold sore duration by roughly one day. The scientific evidence itself is mixed, with some studies supporting efficacy and others showing no benefit. At around $37 for two treatments, reviewers question whether the modest benefit justifies the cost and inconvenience, especially for people prone to recurrent outbreaks.

"Abreva is so lame. You have to use it five times a day and it cuts down the duration of cold sores by maybe one day. It's the lamest thing. $36.99 for the two treatments. If you get recurrent cold sores, that is not a good use of your resources. It's a very negligible impact and a lot of effort."

"This is meant to be a cold sore treatment topically. The data on it is kind of mid so some studies say it does help some studies say it doesn't help. It's meant to shorten the duration of cold sores and cold sores are caused by the herpes virus. Maybe helpful for a specific case use scenario."
