What the gurus are saying

The gurus who looked at this found the evidence mixed at best. One expert called the benefit negligible, noting it may cut cold sore duration by roughly a day while asking for five daily applications, making it a heavy lift for the payoff. The other found the research itself divided, with some studies supporting it and others not, and suggested it might work in specific cases but without strong confidence. Cost and effort weighed against modest results make this a tough sell for people who get cold sores often.

"Abreva is so lame. You have to use it five times a day and it cuts down the duration of cold sores by maybe one day. It's the lamest thing. $36.99 for the two treatments. If you get recurrent cold sores, that is not a good use of your resources. It's a very negligible impact and a lot of effort."

"This is meant to be a cold sore treatment topically. The data on it is kind of mid so some studies say it does help some studies say it doesn't help. It's meant to shorten the duration of cold sores and cold sores are caused by the herpes virus. Maybe helpful for a specific case use scenario."
