What the gurus are saying

This jelly mask earns consistent praise for its ability to calm irritated, sensitive skin and lock in hydration overnight, making it especially valued by those dealing with barrier damage, redness, or dryness. The texture is distinctive, a bouncy, medium-weight jelly that sits protectively on the surface and takes around 10 minutes to fully dry, so applying it once you are already in bed helps avoid pillow sticking. Dermatologists highlight its strength in the retinoid sandwich technique (layered under a retinoid to cut irritation) and note it works well for most skin types, though the sticky finish means many prefer applying it only to sensitive areas like cheeks and under-eyes rather than the full face.

"I have been a huge fan of and continue to like and use a lot the Abib Barrier Jelly, which is essentially a glycerin rich night face mask or repair mask. It's a great option, a little bit less sticky compared to just straight vegetable glycerin, and either of them work well."

Top Korean Skincare Products To Save Your Dry Skin
"If you've got the sensitivity on your cheeks like you put on maybe your toner really just a cream and it burns and stings you need to try this out. It is a thick clear colorless jelly it has glycerin it has rice bran extract these are hydrating soothing moisturizing ingredients that help really with barrier recovery because they help improve water content in the skin. Saccharomyces rice bran ferment filter is also packed with anti-inflammatory soothing compounds. The consistency of this is like a thick jelly that really just sits there on the surface of the skin protecting it from transepidermal water loss and ultimately the end result is improved moisture content better barrier turnover overall healthier happier more hydrated skin. You could use it nightly if you needed to or you could just use it as needed when your skin is extra dry put it on as the final step in your nighttime skincare routine because it is pretty occlusive so things that you put on top of it will have a challenging time penetrating that jelly barrier."

"This is the Abib barrier jelly and this is amazing for the moisture barrier. It is a thick, rich barrier jelly as the name implies. It has glycerin, it has rice ferment which is loaded with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. It's a pretty non-nonsense ingredient list, there's not a whole lot going on. There's no niacinamide, so I know some of you find that niacinamide burns and stings, this does not have that. It really doesn't have any call-out signature ingredient, but the overall formulation is not only super hydrating but it helps to provide almost like a second skin. I like to use this as the final step in my nighttime skincare routine. This would be an excellent top layer moisturizer for the moisture sandwich technique. I don't recommend using it underneath the active form of vitamin A because it is a barrier product so it will limit penetration of that into the skin, but using it as a top coat is excellent. It's also really good if you live somewhere with cold winter winds."

"This is arguably the best Korean skincare product discovery of 2024, the Abib Rice Probiotics Overnight Mask Barrier Jelly. It's so good with really minimal ingredients but the product really delivers results. It's a thick, rich, clear, colorless jelly with no niacinamide for those of you who are sensitive. It has glycerin, sodium hyaluronate, which is a salt of hyaluronic acid, and adenosine, which are hydrating humectants and moisturizing ingredients. It's free of fragrance and contains lactobacillus rice ferment filtrate, which is going to deliver anti-inflammatory compounds to the skin. I've been using it in the moisture sandwich technique where you apply a lightweight moisturizer, apply your retinoid, and then apply another moisturizer on top, essentially sandwiching your retinoid between the moisturizer to cut down on dryness and irritation. Using this barrier jelly as the top layer of the sandwich is amazing. It really locks in moisture and cuts down on irritation. It's especially nice when you put it on the cheeks, which are an area prone to sensitivity and dryness, burning and stinging because they have more blood vessels. Also great on the neck."

Dermatologist Reviews the Most Purchased Skincare of 2025
"This is really a standout for skin barrier repair. If you have been overdoing it on exfoliants or you're getting adjusted to a retinoid, or hey, it's winter cold winter winds can leave the skin chapped, raw, sensitive, or maybe you just have sensitive skin at baseline and you enjoy some barrier support at the end of the day. The formula focuses on rice extract and probiotics which help with skin barrier support. It offers deep and long-lasting hydration and helps to substantially cut down on the loss of water from the skin. It is a thick, clear, colorless jelly. I believe it's very glycerin rich, lending itself to a formula that offers not only deep and long-lasting hydration, but creates this nice lightweight, thin film on the surface of the skin to reduce transepidermal water loss, aka barrier support. I recommend this if your skin is dry, it's feeling a little tight, it's getting flaky, it's very sensitive, you're getting some redness. You can use it to the entire face, but you also could just use it to certain areas of the face where you're having maybe a lot of sensitivity or you've overdone it and you're experiencing a lot of flaking and dryness. I recommend applying this at night time as the final step in your skincare routine. But a word of warning, it is a sticky formula, so you want to make sure to give it at least 20 to 30 minutes before you go to bed and put your face down on that pillow."
Drunk Elephant Dupes at Dollar Tree?! Dermatologist Investigates…
"I actually like to use it because the hydrating action of it coupled with the reduction in transepidermal water loss, it really helps to reduce the appearance of pores on the nose to plump up those little fine lines. I love this stuff. Fragrance-free. The result that I get is it plumps, it hydrates, and it reduces the appearance through both of those mechanisms of those little fine lines. It also brightens up the under eye area just by light scattering. But importantly, it's a skin protectant. So it helps cut down on access of irritants to the eyelid skin. That glycerin rich formula, not just the presence of glycerin, has to be at a high percentage like 20% to call yourself a glycerin skin protectant."
*MUST TRY* Korean Skincare For Healing The Skin Barrier
"The Abib Rice Probiotics Overnight Mask Barrier Jelly is an amazing glycerin base skin protectant. It's a very thick, rich, clear, colorless, fragrance-free jelly of glycerin as well as lactobacillus and rice ferment, which are going to be enriched in hydrating compounds. Glycerin is not only hydrating but it can act as a skin protectant depending on the overall formulation. You could use this to the entire face if you really want to. It's not greasy but it is sticky, so when you put it on just be prepared it's sticky and it takes a while for it to sink down and dry down. If you put this on and then you get in bed it will stick to your sheet, so give it some time to really sink in. I usually just put it to my cheeks if I'm dealing with some sensitivity, or I love using it on my neck or kind of the crows feet area. Not only is it great for barrier recovery, but because it is glycerin it's hydrating, so it really plumps up and smooths the skin surface. So the following morning when you wake up your skin is just radiant and glowy. It doesn't form those little dry fine lines as prominently."
Dermatologist Skincare Empties: What I Repurchase and What I Skip
"I finally finished another jar of the Abib Rice Probiotics Overnight Mask. This really lasts me a long time, primarily because I only use it on my cheeks and my neck for really sealing things in. This is amazing. If you want to try slugging or maybe you've tried slugging, you're like, I cannot handle putting petroleum jelly all over my face, you need to try a glycerin forward skin protectant because they are not greasy. They deeply hydrate. They quench. They do feel real sticky going on, but once it sinks down and dries down, it is amazing. It's got the rich glycerin forward formula, but it's got rice ferment full of anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hydrating compounds. The following morning after putting this all over your face, you're going to wake up locked and loaded with hydration and you're going to have that bouncy, glassy, glowy skin that everybody wants. This is a holy grail and I have since reacquired another jar."

"This is the Abib Rice Probiotics Overnight Mask Barrier Jelly. Did this to my entire face last night. Zero regrets. As a matter of fact, I'm going to come back in under the eyes because yeah, the glycerin in there, I'm telling you, dark circles much, much better. Light scattering, moisture retention."

"It's the Abib Rice Probiotics Overnight Mask, this is a 2024 yes please, probably going to become a staple because I've just really been loving this final step in my nighttime skincare routine. You just need a tiny scoop, you don't need a lot of this jelly, especially to my cheeks. This jelly mask dries a little sticky, it's going to be sticky and tacky, but it's totally worth it because tomorrow when I wake up my skin is like did we even experience overnight. At night your skin loses more water, you have increased blood flow, it tends to get worse, that's one of the reasons why when you wake up in the morning your skin is not as vivacious as it is at baseline. But doing this overnight jelly mask as the final step, it's a really good hydrating occlusive moisturizer, doing this is the final step."

"It's a lot more lightweight, it's glossy, it's really very soothing. By the time I go to bed it's fully absorbed and it's not like sticky, it doesn't smear all over my sheets or anything, but it really is so soothing. It's going to be great come winter time if you live somewhere where you deal with windburn because it really just soothes the barrier. I haven't tried using it around the eyelids though I imagine it'd be pretty good there, but you'd want to be really conservative with how much you use to make sure to not get it in your eye. Like make sure to only do a tiny amount because you run the risk of it getting into your eye."
The Best Skincare Of 2024
"I got the Abib barrier jelly in one of my Korean Advent calendars and I tried it out and let me tell you this has been one of the best overnight masks. It's like an extra rich moisturizer to really help with reducing water loss which tends to be greater at night when you sleep. This is like a thick clear colorless hydrating jelly. It has glycerin which is hydrating and a skin protectant, and it has rice bran extract which I find a lot of Korean moisturizing products do center around rice and I often find that I get along well with those. This is a thick sticky product you put it on and your skin is going to be a bit sticky so you want to give it some time before you go lie down on the pillow otherwise it's going to stick to your pillow. It will dry down though and absorb after some time, give it maybe 20 minutes at least. This is a really great option if you have sensitive cheeks. If you're someone who lives in a cold climate you're out walking those cold dry winter winds can leave your cheeks raw and chapped, so this is really helpful for that."

Moisturizers We Need To Discuss | Skincare Reviews 2024
"This Rice Probiotics Overnight Mask Barrier Jelly from ABIB has a clear colorless jellylike texture, very thick, and it really does what it markets itself as doing. It's great for your skin barrier, fragrance-free, and has rice ferment and saccharomyces ferment with no niacinamide. I highly recommend this if you are going through a bout of sensitivity, redness, peeling, irritation because it is so soothing and so supportive of the needs of the barrier. It's like a little cushion to your skin. It is a little sticky in terms of texture and takes a long time for it to really dry down and absorb. As you're applying it, it almost looks like you have this thin sheet of cellophane on your face. It's really good at reducing water loss. [...] I would recommend considering using it as the top coat in the retinoid sandwich, which is a way to moisturize the skin while using a topical retinoid to reduce dryness and irritation."
I Finished These Skincare Products—Would I Repurchase?
"Absolutely love it. It's on the pricier side of things, but it works really well. If you're someone who gets irritation, this is great for soothing that. It doesn't matter if you have oily, acne prone skin or not, you can use something like this. It's not going to clog pores or any of that. [...] It is very glycerin rich, very thick, deeply hydrating, protective. [...] A little bit goes a long way and it is very sticky. It's a final step of your nighttime skincare routine product for hydration, barrier repair, barrier recovery. If you have windburn on your cheeks it'll be [...] great to heal and repair that, also great if you have a lot of irritation from products. It takes time to dry down though, you have to be patient. I typically only put it on my cheeks and maybe a little on the bridge of my nose because it's way too much stickiness with my hair and everything if I use it all over. But it really does leave your skin hydrated, plump. The following morning when you wake up, it's like wow. It delivers results and [...] took me a long time to make my way through it, but it's a holy grail favorite."

"This ties for my favorite, along with the PDRN collagen overnight mask. This is an incredible occlusive mask that is fantastic for preventing transepidermal water loss. It's a product you can use for slugging, though you want to be careful if you use strong actives at night since slugging locks those ingredients in more and could end up irritating your skin. To be totally honest, I do slightly prefer this original over the PDRN version, but they're both so similar that I don't think you need to pick up both, you can just try one and see if the category works for you."

"This is the rice probiotics overnight mask, one of those occlusive products that looks like it will just be a gel on your skin but actually is very heavy, one you use for slugging. In all truth I didn't stick with this this past month, I think it's just because I felt like this was so heavy on its own, I just used more of the Jericho Rose cream at night instead. Nice product overall, I just didn't use it that much this past month."

"I followed up on the Abib overnight mask that I got through one of the advent calendars, I knew I liked it from first try. The gel like texture looks like it would be too light for my dry skin, but no, this type of texture can also be very occlusive, and that's exactly what you get in this product. It is one of those magical products where if I put this on my face before I go to bed I still wake up with my skin not feeling incredibly dry, especially when the heat has been running all night. It contains lactobacillus rice ferment, a postbiotic ingredient that shares some similarities with bifida ferment, so overall it's a calming, strengthening formula."

"This is the Abib Rice Probiotics Overnight Mask, this really surprised me. When I first opened this I did not think I was going to love this texture, it looks like a gel, and gel is just not the right match for my dry skin. But looks can be deceiving, and it turns out I actually really like this. It also has a really simple ingredients list which works great for me and other sensitive skin types. It does have postbiotic ingredients, non-living bacteria in a skincare product, so I guess the name is my one minor critique. But you still get benefits from the breakdown of that bacteria, no fragrance, no alcohol, easy to work into your routine. I actually think this might be one of very few products where both dry and oily skin types could appreciate it."

"I like this one because this is a gel based formula. So even for the summers if you want something nice and extra hydrating this will work and it's not going to be like sticky and oily. So this ABIB rice overnight mask is a great one and I am going definitely definitely repurchase it."

"I have actually truly never seen anything like this. Anything that kind of texture or formula. You apply as your last stage of skincare at night and then you wash it off by morning, which suggests that it does stay on the skin. But I really do feel like that's another option to lock in all that moisture, all that stuff that you're applying on your skin overnight, maybe it transfers onto your pillow, maybe you have air conditioning and it dries out your skin, heating, you know, that kind of thing. These kind of options, this overnight locking moisture into the skin, keeping moisture in the skin is going to be a great option, especially for you oily people out there. If you have a big event the next day, your wedding day, you're going to a wedding, you need your foundation to last all day. Your skin's a little bit dehydrated, but we know that in the morning, if we apply too much moisturizer, too much hydration, it's not going to help our foundation last as long. By making sure that your skin overnight is hydrated, kept moisturized, you don't have to use as much in the morning."

"This has helped with brightening up that under eye area from the lack of sleep and the stress, so it's just a really good performing product. I love this texture. It's a sleeping mask but I've never really encountered a sleeping mask with this beautiful jelly texture. It's not gel, it's truly a bouncy jelly texture and it feels so hydrating, so replenishing, so cooling and refreshing on the skin, but it's a nice hefty gel that really does work nicely as a sleeping mask. It has that occlusivity that helps to hug in hydration and all your other skincare layers to really resist dehydration. The ingredient rice really helps to give this really beautiful overall brightness to the skin, that healthiness to the complexion, and it actually makes your skin feel so soft and conditioned as well. It's a new take on slugging, it is something that improves the skin, and it is a winner."

"I'm not ready for my heavy creams just yet, I need something in between, and that's exactly what this Abib mask is. It is something in between. On the jar it actually says it's a barrier jelly and that's exactly what the texture is. It is a jelly texture, it is like this medium weight gel texture that actually feels really refreshing and hydrating. I could definitely see myself using this in the summertime but right now it feels so good, so refreshing. Feeling a little bit of dehydration lately so this jelly just really soothes, refreshes, cools my skin but it's not like the type of gel that just disappears. It actually has more of a medium kind of heftiness to it, a jelly, a barrier jelly, and it just feels really really good and very protective, medium weight on the skin. I have to say it does take a hot second to dry. I've been keeping this on my bedside and I'll put it on when I'm in bed and I'm like okay, cannot lay down until this jelly dries on my skin. It takes about a good 10 minutes. If you lay down before then your cheek will definitely stick to the pillow. So it's not perfect, but I have to say this texture, it's so fun, it's so bouncy, it's so refreshing, it's so hydrating but it's very protective."

"This is actually best for all skin types and it has a really pleasing texture and it's particularly good if you're looking to achieve a lot of hydration on your skin. This has quickly earned its place on my nightstand. As soon as I get into bed I'm grabbing and slathering this all over my face, and I really really love this mask. Rice is the star ingredient here. Rice really has a couple of functions: number one it actually helps to brighten up your skin and brings out your inner glow and evens out a dull complexion, but it also is a skin conditioning ingredient so it's going to make your skin feel really silky soft and has this really nice light moisturization property. We're not talking oil, we're not talking creamy or silky. Rice is just a kiss of a little bit of moisture to the skin, really helps balance things out without making things really greasy. It tends to work for a lot of different skin types. This is a very hydrating mask with a heavy content of glycerin and diglycerine in here."

"I am one for jellies, I love a good jelly. If a product is named Jelly I'm going to buy it because usually I link that to soft, light, quenching, hydrating and good for both my dry and oilier skin. The texture is the most important thing about this. It's like slugging meets a gel cream, it's like a really nice unique texture that would be great for people with oily skin. Your skin feels protected, it feels like you've got a nice layer on it without any stickiness, without any greasy feeling. It's just heavy enough to protect your skin from moisture loss but light enough to not feel sticky and intrusive and suffocating. It's a very unique texture but it's so so nice. Whenever I use thick masks I will wash my face the next day but to me that's just a sign that my overnight mask did a good job. Really unique, a really nice unique product. I feel like ABIB haven't been getting the attention that a lot of their products deserve and this could potentially be their big viral product."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
