What they flagged

Nothing. None of the experts who reviewed it raised a problem.

    What the gurus are saying

The cooling effect stands out; gurus found it noticeably calms skin for 10 to 15 minutes after use, and those with rosacea or easily irritated skin report it soothes flushes and itchy breakouts instantly. The dual-sided pad design matters too: the textured side offers gentle physical exfoliation when wiped, while the smooth side can stay on skin as a light hydrating mask for a stronger effect. Leave it on for several minutes rather than wiping straight away to see the most benefit.

"Heart leaf, or Houttuynia cordata, is a herb that's used in a lot of Asian food and like most plant extracts it is full of antioxidants. The main thing I saw this recommended for is cooling and calming and I feel like this 100% lives up to that. I found this a very lightly hydrating product. It's also meant to be good for gentle acne care. It's also got wintergreen leaf, allantoin, hyaluronic acid and trehalose, so these are mostly humectant moisturizers that hold on to water and keep your skin hydrated. The cotton pads have one side that's rough and one side that's smooth, so the rough side is meant to be gently exfoliating, it is very gentle. And then after you use it you can leave it with the smooth side down as sort of like a little targeted sheet mask. I found that the cotton pads are quite nice, like having that little gentle sheet mask. If you leave it on it does seem to work a lot better. The cooling effect does last for a good amount of time after taking it off. I found that it lasts for maybe 10 to 15 minutes."

"I really do like when that toner pad serves more of a function on its own rather than like oh this could have just been a toner and I use these particular tone pads year round because as somebody with very easily irritated skin easy sensitized skin and rosacea these are so soothing and calming everything I want for my skin and they've done their own case studies as abib have to show how much these significantly cool down the skin. So this helps with my rosacea flushes if I've got irritated skin this is very calming if I got extra annoying and irritated kind of like itchy breakouts this instantly soothes of course heartleaf been at the core of the ingredient list in this product but then we also have some really nice hydrating ingredients that you'd expect to find in a toner like sodium hyaluronate and glycerin and something called hydroxy ethyl urea which kind of really just helps keep your skin bouncy and hydrated."

"I know my rosacea does enjoy it. I know I'm going to get a nice soothing calming experience. [...] We have glycerin and sodium hyaluronate as well, both amazing humectants. [...] I leave them on for about 5 minutes and then do a very gentle wipe around them because they are slightly textured, so you get very gentle physical exfoliation. It's a really nice hydrating calming stage. Yeah, I like these a lot. I like these a lot."

"One of my most used products in the bathroom. The Abib Heartleaf Spot Pads Calming Touch. When the weather chops and changes, my skin gets really irritated, especially if it's going into colder weather and I just get dry. So dry here and on my cheeks. And these have been so calming, soothing. Of course, their key ingredient being Heartleaf. After cleansing on dry skin, I'll slap these on for about 15 minutes and just let them work their magic. And they've been really soothing, really calming. They have this instant cooling touch to them as well. If you get rosacea as well, and you just want your skin to cool down, bang these on. They're great."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Urea

Urea both holds water in the skin and gently loosens dead surface cells. At higher strengths it has good evidence for very dry or thickened skin.

    Source: DermNet

    Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

    Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
