★ Best budget retinol
Retinol 1% in Squalane
The Ordinary Retinol 1% in Squalane

If you're really on a budget, absolutely a gold standard is The Ordinary Retinol 1% in Squalane, and I would go with retinol rather than Granactive because I think Granactives are unproven.

"This is the best moisturizer to be launched this year. I absolutely love it. This is the bioactive ceramide repairing and plumping moisturizer and I've used it most days since it's been launched. It's absolutely brilliant."

"My absolutely favorite high street moisturizer of all time is The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors. It's basically a tick list of everything your skin needs to hydrate itself. It's got a beautiful mix of humectants to lock in water, emollients to keep your skin smooth and soft, and then it's got a little bit of an occlusive in it to lock everything in place. It's beautiful. You can use it morning and night. You can sandwich all of your retinols with it from the 0.2% right the way through to the granactive right the way through to the 1% right the way through to the brand new retinol. You can put it underneath, you can put it on top. Personally I put it on top. They really are gold standard products for me. They are always in my beauty cupboard."

The chemists have come up with all these wonderful hybrid products, these gel creams that speak to oily and combination skin, and Aveeno is one of the gel cream equivalents. They're really lovely."

"This is really light, so people say I can't wear moisturizer, it's like very airy, it's like really nothing, and yet it's really hydrating. So when I have people who really don't want something heavy, this is just a really nice light moisturizer. If you're someone like in the summer who doesn't want something heavy, it's a nice product."

If you're feeling really hot and bothered, find yourself one of the pimple patches, put the tiniest dab on, less than you think you need, put the pimple patch over it and go get married. It's unbelievable."

"If you get it around your eyes, I was prescribed Elidel cream, which is pimecrolimus, and this is actually an immunomodulator. It works on the T cells and the cytokines within the skin to stop your skin from overreacting to something. So if the barrier function of your skin breaks down and microorganisms and funguses and airborne irritations can get on it, then you end up with this overreaction where your skin is basically popping out these white blood cells to try and sort of shed the irritants that are landing on your skin. That's essentially the only way I can describe it."

"This is the night cream, the Toleriane night cream. They have a day cream as well. I would use that night and day. It doesn't sting your skin because when you're getting a breakout of perioral dermatitis, virtually anything, even tap water, can make it itch and sting so much it's just really unpleasant. It's very light."

"This is a cult bestseller, this is Curel and it's the Curel Deep Moisture Spray. It now comes in a miniature which is great for on flights or for just putting in your handbag. It sprays out pseudo ceramides and humectants and it basically locks water into the skin. Brilliant for flying, brilliant for this time of year. Keep it by the side of bed if you're having trouble sleeping, if you're getting a little bit of hot and muggy it's sort of night."

"I have to moisturize twice a day otherwise my skin will go wild. I love La Roche-Posay Lipikar really, my like one of my favorite moisturizers, and I'll use it top to toe. I'll do that in the morning after I have a shower and I'll do it in the evening as well. I'll usually have a very short quick shower and then I'll apply it on slightly damp skin. You want to get it on and always go downwards, don't do lots of rubbing up and down because you might trap the hairs on your body and get little bumps everywhere."

"Bioderma Atoderm is fantastic. They do an amazing wash because if you often go to an old school GP and you've got a very young child with a really chronic dry skin condition they give you horrible aqueous cream which is really unpleasant. They do the most beautiful rinse off oil for it. It's so much more pleasant to use, it's gorgeous. I think that's a really important thing especially when it comes to anyone with eczema or if you're looking after a child with eczema you need people to be on board to use it, otherwise if you have a horrible thick soap substitute that you'll never use you won't see any benefit."

"The Naturium Multi-Peptide Moisturizer is a beautiful texture. Everything I've put on my face so far has been watery super lightweight, so this I go in with and it's very hydrating, instantly plumps fine lines. It's quite cooling on the skin. For a lot of people that wouldn't be enough hydration, but I'm going to get a lot more hydration from my SPF. I love that."

"The Ordinary also have a new moisturizer and I absolutely love the NMF, it's one of my go-to budget moisturizers, it's really lovely, super lightweight, goes in really easily, sinks into your skin in seconds, makes a great makeup base. There is now a Natural Moisturizing Factors and Beta Glucan, and beta glucan is a calming soothing ingredient. In comparison to the original one, and I've been testing this for a few days, it is surprisingly a gel and that will really shock you if you're used to the normal NMF. It is super hydrating, goes on, slips over your skin beautifully, and I think is absolutely unique in texture. It's a jelly-like texture that is just so beautiful. This will suit summer skins so well. It's particularly suited to dehydrated sensitive skin that don't necessarily want a heavy oily occlusive moisturizer. It's just heavenly. It will be the most perfect thing to take on holiday, especially for partners that might have had just a little touch too much sun. It also sits under makeup, which is really rare for a gel. It doesn't pill, and I just think it's beautiful."

"I genuinely do love this moisturizer. It's really lovely. It's Mineral 89, which is like their hero serum but in the cream form, so it goes on as a moisturizer. It's got niacinamide in it, bit of squalene, lots of hydration. It's perfect for winter months or if you just are having a bit of a rough time through the winter and you just need a moisturizer, or maybe your sunscreen isn't moisturizing you enough. What I love about this moisturizer is you can use it morning and night, so you can sandwich it with a retinol. It's just a really good sort of moisturizer."

Biossance created hempsqualane, which is a squalane molecule which they derive from corn and then they basically feed the corn to the bacteria, the bacteria produce the squalane and then it's half the size so it goes into the skin more, hydrating, amazing."

"I'm absolutely a believer in this. This is not the same formula. It does have C, it does have E, it does have ferulic. This is a smaller brand, Geek & Gorgeous. I think they are really good, they have a very nice vitamin A product, but to me their standout product is this. I think it's just wonderful. I find that if people say they can do five steps, I don't want to give them more than three because the more you give, the less likely they are. You're much better off getting people really committed to a couple of different things and let them develop where they want to go from there. This is one of those products I find that does that. It's a beautiful product."

"This is just a lovely product that people put on as exactly what it's called a fortifier and it does do a nice job of that. This is for someone who is a little raw, who is a little bit in need of extra support. It's a very nice product because it's a few different things, it's DNA repair, it's got some very nice hydrating things. This is not inexpensive, this runs over a hundred dollars, but it's half the fluid ounce and it lasts. "You can also use a peptide at night. This is the Medik8 Liquid Peptides, and I would happily put that all over my face before putting on a retinol. You can easily use peptides, which are signaling ingredients, and they basically signal for the skin to repair itself as you sleep. You can wear them during the day as well. I just want something to give my skin slip to put the retinol or retinaldehyde over the top."

"Step two is non-negotiable for me: it has to be a vitamin C, and you'll not be surprised to know that I use the gold standard, which is SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic. I know, I know, it's expensive. This is 15% L-ascorbic acid with ferulic acid and vitamin E. A lot of people don't like the smell; I've just got over it. I've used it since it was launched, it's probably 12 years now. I swear it's one of the reasons my pigmentation and my sun damage isn't as bad as it is, but I get that it's expensive. It's a pure L-ascorbic acid, so it's the active form of vitamin C, meaning your skin doesn't have to work hard to access what it needs. It gives you an antioxidant boost, boosts collagen production, protects your skin from pollution, and boosts the effect of your SPF. It's just clinically proven. Dr. Sheldon Pinnell was the person who started SkinCeuticals and did all the research on topical vitamin C and skin, and it's a gold standard for that reason."

"The Allies of Skin vitamin C, slightly more expensive but I love it. It's a blend of L-ascorbic acid and other forms of vitamin C that have to be converted on the skin by your skin's enzymes naturally, so it takes slightly longer to deliver but actually makes it better for sensitive skin if skin's irritated by vitamin C."

"This vitamin C is definitely worth testing. It's stabilized, non-reactive. Vitamin C stuff can scare me, but this one did not. It's not the way you'd expect from vitamin C products, and it's versatile enough that you could use it all day and night because it's not quite as heavy."

"If you love The Crystal Retinol and I've been using it for quite a few years now I really love it, there is now a Crystal Retinol 24, obviously that's a play on the fact that it's 2024, but that is 0.24% retinaldehyde. Retinaldehyde as I've mentioned before is the next metabolic step, so retinol is metabolized to retinaldehyde, that then gets metabolized to retinoic acid which is the active form of vitamin A in the skin. This is the strongest one you can get in the UK."

"This is 0.2% retinal Emulsion and it's a retinoid and in my opinion it's the strongest and the best value for money retinoid that's currently available. [...] Retinal [...] is the next metabolic step on from retinol. [...] Traditionally in skincare [...] we had retinol esters, which your body then has to convert from a retinol ester to a retinol to a retinal to the active form of vitamin A in your skin called trans retinoic acid. [...] Retinol esters are still available but retinol was a beauty buzz word probably about two or three years ago and then as you got used to working through retinol esters to retinol you wanted more, [...] and that's where retinal comes in."

"It's great, and this is super heavenly because you can toss it in your purse and you don't want to find out that your purse has more of this product on than you do, very very helpful. This is the Max Hydration, and I just think it's beautiful. It's for somebody who is not, I'm not a scientist and I'm not interested in as much of the research, doing it on my own. I want a brand you can trust. It's just the perfect weight, it's the perfect amount of moisture. It mixes beautifully with a touch of water, so if you don't want it as heavy, it's not heavy anyway, but it is a true traditional night experience. But it can be used on your hands, it could be used on a flight, it can be used before you go to work. For me, before I go to work and I know I'm going to sit in a hair chair first, it's kind of just like a nice little fella to come with me. "The best American sunscreen that I think is really fantastic is this EltaMD UV Restore Tinted. This is the one I wear day in and day out on my face when I don't have European stuff available. It does a really nice job. I am very, very, very pale, I have a really lack of melanation, and it's very hard to do tints well on very fair skin. People often think that's not true, no, you look pretty damn orange. This does a really good job of it. Not the other ones of their brand because people interchange, like, well I use this. "What I want from an SPF that I use every single day is I want it to be super light, I want it to be almost like a watery serum. This is the Biore UV Aqua Rich [...] Watery Essence. [...] I've created lots of videos and I've written about this in The Times, but I don't think I've ever spoken to you guys on YouTube about it. [...] Let me show you the texture. [...] I will actually apply that to my chest as well, which is the one place I always forget to apply SPF. It's an SPF 50, they have an SPF 30 as well. It goes in so quickly, it's super light, lightly fragranced, without a doubt for me the perfect texture. Never forget the backs of your hands. Look at that, absolutely beautiful, sinks in in seconds, and it's so reasonably priced. It's exclusive to Superdrug, previously you had to go to specialist sites like YesStyle to get it. [...] There's an SPF 32, I honestly can't tell that much difference in terms of texture, so for me I would always go for the SPF 50. It is slightly richer, by the way, than the original Japanese formula, still amazing. It comes from a company called Kao, that also owned John Frieda."

"I love color science because it comes in different shades so it's a SPF 50 really high UVA protection but it blocks out your visible light which is really important. It's called something like Flex, it comes in a bit like a medicate tube with a little pump and it goes on as a cream or fluid. The reason they're tinted is because iron oxide has a rusty red appearance which doesn't look good on anyone so if you put a tint in it becomes more cosmetically acceptable."

It's just really nice. Do you need to spend the money on it? No. Should you because it'll make you moisturized? Yeah. Because you know what, you're worth it."

"I like a gentle rinse off milky oil that I can shave with that will protect my skin will cleanse off SPF but won't dehydrate my skin but will leave it fresh and this is it, it's absolutely beautiful. This is Naturium Glow Getter Multi-Oil Body Wash and essentially it's an oil but it's a cleansing oil for the face, super light but actually rinses away to milk and just leaves the skin perfectly hydrated. [...] It's loaded with glycerin and squalane but it's also got a super light oil to gel texture. I just love it, absolutely gorgeous."

[...] It's great for if you're just walking out and about, flip flops, you just want to make the heels look tidy or your shins look tidy, you can spray it on and suddenly you [...] look down and go oh my God, actually legs quick when you're already dressed."

"I have to say honestly, I did not expect to be impressed by a celebrity skincare line. If you've got teenage daughters, they should be buying Rhode. I think that this brand is so clever, it's barrier boosting, it's gentle, it's peptides, it's barrier protecting. I've not used a duff product, I love it, it's really nice. They are so good, this is the range your daughter should be using. The Peptide Lip Treatment, I don't like the smell of them but I totally get why you love them. The Rhode Peptide Glazing Fluid is just a really beautiful lightweight gel cream with peptide and hyaluronic acid, super lightweight, lovely lovely."

"They've come back, they're bigger, they're chunkier, they're sexier, they have a huge do foot for your lips that's quite large, but they are super light in color. There's one of the darkest shades but you can barely see the color on the back of my hand. They are very sweet and very sickly, so technically not something I would wear, but only because I don't like heavily fragrant scented things on my lips. But we have to give a shout out to the OG Clarins, they were there first before anybody else."

"What's great about this product is that it doesn't sink into the wrinkles. It's got 1% hyaluronic acid in it. It's just a fantastic, really quick, easy to use foundation skincare product. I really rate this, it's major, it is brilliant. It's absolutely brilliant, it's such a good product. You can apply it the way you just apply skincare. You don't really need any skills, you don't need a brush, you don't need a sponge, you don't need a makeup artist. It's amazing. Using this little serum thing at night, it's perfect for me. It's easy, so that's perfect."

"There's just not enough superlatives for me to explain how much I love that product. It is without a doubt my go-to skin coverage. So don't panic about the reformulation as far as I'm concerned it performs in exactly the same way. It's just more suited for all skin conditions including very sensitive skin because of the 100 mineral pigments. The BB Cream goes on as a tint and just gives you soft focused skin."

"Hydration Vaccine is a really unique beautiful moisturizer and it's unlike most moisturizers I love in that it tends to be quite thick. [...] What I love about it is it almost feels like a balm but it's got a soft focus effect on the skin. It does hydrate the surface of the skin, it's loaded with actives, but it's also got a silicon masking effect. [...] It doesn't peel under makeup. It's beautifully under makeup. It's actually formulated to be a hydrator and an emollient but also a makeup primer."

"It's clear spackles, it's a silicon that basically fills in all of the imperfections for the face. The technology was originally created by Clinique with a product called pore minimizer, and there are about 15 similar products out there, but this just happens to be the nicest one I found. It lasts, it's a nice little tin. This is just a wonderful product. I have a ton of patients who are using this."

"There's a new dual eye cream that's really exciting and interesting because it also takes away all the questions that I have, you know, when do I use this and when, like how do they pair, how do they marry, how does it work. So it takes care of a lot. It's convenient, the packaging is great, it's simple, you understand what it is that you are putting on your face. This fits in a purse. I use it when I'm working and when we do touch-ups. This is a product that's so friendly and helpful because it moves beautifully, it cleans up, it doesn't take everything away but it helps get everything sort of back in order and behaving. And it also has sunscreen."

"This is peptides and lash conditioning ingredients alone, so it's not like the first generation prostaglandin analogs which there's been a lot of backlash with because they can cause discoloration of the lashes and irritation and all that. I had zero irritation with them. A cosmetic chemist told me they're a tick box of great ingredients, which is why I'm testing it."

"It's so clever, [...] it must be the juice. [...] I have used it for about three days now. I've got two coats on today, not a single clog, pretty much unheard of, right? You have to go in, you know, maybe move lashes around, they stick together. It's so clever, absolutely brilliant. Last night I had supper with Monica and she said to me, 'You have lash extensions in, don't you?' I didn't. I just had L'Oreal Air Volume on."

"I absolutely love my Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer. I love it because I've been through so much with this. Maximum wind minimum heat, which means it maximizes the drying power but minimizes the damage. I've never found a dryer lighter, more effective, more powerful than this. When you go to the hairdresser and they're drying your scalp and you think that's got a bit too close, that's burning my scalp, but imagine what that's doing to your hair. Even though your hair is dead, it does burn and is damaged by heat. Never had that feeling with this ever. Maximum wind minimum heat to dry your hair effectively, and it smooths as well. I just absolutely love this product. Dyson have mastered the cyclone technology of wind because obviously they do all the vacuum cleaners as well. It is expensive, but to me it is unique for hair gadgets on the market."

"This is Bare by Head & Shoulders and I'll be really honest with you, I went down to interview Claudia Winkleman again and I was a little bit sort of 'am I going to love this or not'. I have used this shampoo pretty much all of the time since I had my Brazilian blow dry and yes it is sulfate free and it's just incredible. If you want a really good High Street shampoo this is the one to go for. There is Pure Clean which is really great in the height of summer when your scalp is slightly oily and then there's another version that's more gentle on your hair if your hair is colored. I can essentially shampoo my hair with this and still brush my hair without any conditioner in it. Now I do have a Brazilian blow dry but that is my at the moment my number one sulfavorite shampoo that I'm using."

"You basically use it on freshly cleansed skin. Most people use it at night just before they go to bed. You can see the pop in pop out eye protectors, so you actually don't get any infrared going anywhere near or any red light going near your eyes. It's really comfortable. It comes in close contact with the skin. In 8 weeks, it's proven to reduce the signs of fine lines by 30%, increase plumpness by 57%. It boosts brightness. I think it's particularly good at reducing redness. It's a 10-minute treatment three to five times a week, but most people I know use it five to seven because they just love love love the results. You've got a 16-week money back guarantee and a 2-year warranty. FDA approved, cleared safe."

"It feels warm. It's a genuine pleasure to use. It's a nice relaxing treatment. And you can see the areas that I'm treating getting warmer. I like it to target all of that. If you do that once a week, you are going to see really, really good results. I love this gadget. To me, it's the most pleasant at home gadget to use. It's an electromagnetic wave that basically heats up the deeper layers of the skin. So that's how it can target those collagen boosting cells, those collagen making cells. It heats the skin to an optimum 43 degrees or 104 Fahrenheit to activate collagen. Five minute treatments one to two times a week, but the whole face is really going to take you down to here is really going to take you 70 minutes. It's FDA cleared for all skin tones and skin types, so it's completely safe to use. And it has absolutely zero risk of fat necrosis which I know some of you are concerned about in terms of getting radio frequency micro needling done in clinic. That goes much much deeper into the skin and that can be a risk for some people. No downtime, no pain. Basically, it's like a warm stone massage for the face. But more importantly, you can use it on your body as well. Once you've invested in that gadget, you can essentially use it anywhere you want on your skin. And I think that's really impressive."

"It looks like milk, it really does, and somehow as a spray it acts as basically also a primer. You do not need primer if you use this and it's incredible. It just leaves you really hydrated. I'm someone who in the course of the day on a dry day working indoors you can definitely see the edges of my skin if I'm wearing makeup, but it starts to dry. You can see it. Not with this. It just makes it all go bye-bye. Unbelievable. It's an amazing product."
