"This is the one that The Ordinary has for twelve dollars, and it's the original free form that the studies have been based on for years, so I've been referring to this one for the past five years when talking about azelaic acid. But it feels like gritty little speckles when you apply it, which has been my biggest complaint about this form over the years. If you're using this free form, I'd recommend applying it on damp skin first and letting it sit for a minute or two before going in with your retinoid."

[...] If you've ever bought a skin care product with vitamin C, it turns brown pretty quick and that just means it's oxidized. We got to toss it. It's not going to work. At least here it's in a pump. That doesn't mean it has zero exposure to air, but the exposure is much less and therefore is going to oxidize much slower."

"This one is in the exact same ratio as the C ferulic at the 15%, 1%, and .5%. But I also want you guys to keep in mind that ingredients do not make a recipe. Just keep that in mind if you are going to try it. It has ascorbic acid. It may be tempting, but it can also be extremely irritating and it might not be super stable and only time will tell. If you have melasma, I would just approach all of these very, very, very conservatively because you don't want to irritate or inflame your skin."

"This is their multi-peptide and growth factor advanced lifting serum which I have spoken to you guys about in the past. This is not from humans. This is like I said biomimetic lab synthesized epidermal growth factors. In fact, they have their 3% SH oligopeptide in it that helps with your overall texture and smoothness and it does give you a little bit of a firming effect. It also has other antioxidants in it and other peptides as well which helps in the long term as well. It's pricey. I will tell you it gives a beautiful firming effect, but it does peel a little bit under other products. So, I tend to use this at night for the most part underneath my hyper serum or when I'm using a retinol as well, but I don't really use it throughout the day because I do get a little bit of the peeling underneath other creamy products if I put it on top."

If you have hyperpigmentation, brown spots, discoloration, I'd prefer you go stronger and use a prescription azelaic acid at 15%, but at 10% it is very nicely formulated. It doesn't seem to peel, it doesn't have that powdery aftertaste to it, and not only does this have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, it has a slightly green tint to help reduce visible redness, so this is a win win win."

You can probably use it with Ester vitamin C, so if you're using an active vitamin C [...] use this at night and use the active vitamin C in the morning. "Cetaphil has a healthy renew face serum which has highly purified peptides for $28.99. They say are retinol alternatives to help minimize the look of fine lines and wrinkles. I don't love that they call it a retinol necessarily alternative and don't really fully disclose what the peptides are, but on their website they do say that they have shown that they reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles. They also have provitamin B5, which is also known as panthenol, as well as vitamin B3 to help hydrate your skin and adenosine. It's an interesting product if you do not want to use retinols but you're looking for peptides to trick your body into producing collagen."

"You can buy this one by Experiment, which is a little bit janky and tacky, but this is their 30% glycerin serum. You could put a drop of this, let's say literally a drop of this, just very tacky, into your favorite moisturizer. If you feel like you need to get extra moisture, you can mix it in to really allow your moisturizers to infuse more hydration for your skin. Glycerin at 100% is not great for your skin, so you really do want to make sure that the upper limit does not go above like 30, 40% at most."

It has vitamin B12, which helps to support your skin barrier by reducing dryness and visible redness. It also has centella asiatica and gallic acid. If you are a real nerd, you know that gallic acid helps to target redness associated with external stressors on the skin and by reducing water loss, so it's a very interesting product for your barrier."

"I'm using the Mandelic Pigmentation Corrector Night Serum by Allies of Skin, which has 11 percent mandelic acid, it also has salicylic acid and lactic acid. It's a combination of all three of those acids, plus it has nanopeptide one, which does inhibit the production of melanin and helps with evening out your skin tone, as well as palmitoyl tripeptide 5, which has been shown to slow down the aging process so it has some anti-aging benefits as well, and bakuchiol, which is the natural alternative to retinol. Once the serum has dried off, it does leave a little bit of a tacky residue but you do get a nice glow from it. I mean I'm not hating this glow at all."

"Bioma is $17. This comes in a dropper, I hate the dropper, we already know this, but it is a very lightweight serum. It's their Hydrating Serum which also has squalane and glycerin as well as ceramide NP and phytosphingosine which complements ceramide NP and the effects of ceramides. So their blend is definitely nice if you're looking for a light Hydrating Serum. I think the one by Cocokind is a little bit thicker, this has more of a slip to it. It doesn't have the occlusive ceramides that like the Glow Recipe does or the Cocokind does, so it's more of a Hydrating Serum not so much one that is going to lock in moisture."

"Peace Out Dark Spot Serum is a gel to liquid texture so when it first comes on it comes on jelly and then it just melts into your skin. It has 2.5 percent tranexamic acid and 0.5 percent kojic acid. If you have very sensitive skin this one might be for you and you might actually really benefit from it without getting the irritation. It also has 10 percent AHAs and alpha arbutin, so if you want to have some sort of exfoliating acid with kojic acid and a little bit more this might be an interesting one. The only negative is you can't necessarily use it every single day. It has a little bit of a scent."

It's a nice, clear, lightweight serum you can use this one at night. I find it surprising that brands like dermatologist brands will not tell you to use this at night, not during the day, since it's going to make you more sensitive to the sun."

"This one has a slightly pink tone to it, it smells like candy and you want to eat it. This particular product is actually a combination of five different vitamin C's including the tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, the 3-O ethylated form of vitamin C as well as sodium ascorbyl phosphate, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, and ascorbyl glucoside. They basically put all of the inactive forms of vitamin C in one product with niacinamide and vitamin E as well as ferulic acid in order to maintain its stability and hopefully offer some more antioxidant properties. This is an interesting product if you want a little bit of everything in one."

I would not buy this for redness. I would buy this if you have more pigmentation issues."

"Differin has a Dark Spot Correcting Serum with two percent hydroquinone, and they are pulling hydroquinone from over the counter. If you have your hands on this, then get your hands on it. Hydroquinone is the gold standard when it comes to evening out your skin tone. Two percent hydroquinone over the counter is not necessarily the strongest out there—it's actually the lightest—but if you can't get your hands on a prescription, this is the best bet you have if you have melasma or any sort of stubborn pigmentation that you're trying to get rid of. It retails for twenty dollars. It's a thick, water-like consistency, a little bit thicker than water, and it has a little bit of a scent, but this is great if you have melasma."

"Yes, I agree it does not sting the eyes for a chemical sunscreen stick and for a chemical sunscreen it is quite remarkable. However, I have certain issues with this particular product. Given the nature of the filters being used, my issue with this type of sunscreen stick is that you have a false sense of security that you've used enough to protect your face when you haven't gotten the right amount. You need around two full finger lengths if not three to get your face, your ears and even your neck covered. I went ahead and did a UV test using my UV camera and found that I had to go up to twelve to sixteen swipes of this to get the same amount of coverage compared to a little amount of the actual cream sunscreen. So you do need a lot more of this to get the coverage that you need. I think it's a great adjunct if you're an athlete, you're on the go, you're running, but you need to do a lot more swipes than you actually think you need in order to get the right coverage. Nice product, just don't be fooled by it. You need a lot more. More is more applies to this type of sunscreen stick."

"Minimalist is an Indian brand that I have recently come across. This particular brand has ceramides at 0.3 percent. There are five types of ceramides in here: NP, NS, EOP, AS, and AP, so it's a mix of the hydrophobic and the hydrophilic. It retails for $7.20 or so. It also has madecassoside which is the active ingredient in centella asiatica, which is extremely soothing. So if you have a lot of redness and you're trying to also just calm your skin, this one is a nice one to add, maybe on top of the Glow Recipe. It's nice, it's kind of like lightweight but it is luxurious and silky. It has a little bit though of a medicinal kind of smell which doesn't really bother me but some people may be bothered by it."

The effects are really not that long lasting. The only way you're going to get a long lasting effect is if it's all you put on your face and you skip and bypass the makeup and you'll have like a full day's effect, but it will crease and crack throughout the day. Before you go and spend all of your money on all of these tightening products, they're not great. They may be great for a photo shoot, they may be great for a very short visit to somebody who's important where you're trying to have a Cinderella effect, but they're not great and they're not going to help your face in the long run."

It is a patent-pending bio-retinoid from microalgae Chlorella vulgaris that mimics the benefits of retinol without causing irritation because it's not necessarily a retinoid. The complex also includes, though, retinal, so they've married a retinal, which is stronger than a retinol, to this quote-unquote bio-retinoid. So the retinal might irritate your skin, but the good news is the retinal is so low on the ingredient list that it's probably not at a high percentage at all and it's probably put in there for a marketing claim. Chlorella vulgaris has some benefits that have been shown to improve with smoothing fine lines and increasing your overall skin appearance. If anything there's going to be some antioxidant properties to this, and if you cannot tolerate vitamin C it might be a good alternative."

It is much richer and contains petrolatum, which you should not be afraid of—this is a real occlusive balm. It does contain the colloidal oatmeal that I love so much in their gel moisturizer, which helps with redness or for people who are eczema-prone. It's richer and it's thicker and you can really feel it. I almost want to see this winter if I'm going to substitute it for the Weleda, which I've always used and absolutely adore. The thing I hate about Weleda though is that it has essential oils, so people who have rosacea or have inflamed skin barriers or have sensitive skin can't seem to tolerate it that much. So I think this is going to be one of my newer replacements this winter when I want to see how it compares to the Weleda. I'm very excited about this particular product because Vaseline alone can sometimes just be too thick, way too occlusive, and you do want to have some restorative properties as well, some redness relief, and some nourishing ingredients like the colloidal oat, especially if you have an inflamed skin barrier."
