Dr. Mamina's top picks.

The products Dr. Mamina has crowned best in their category, and brings up again and again.

★ Best gold standard vitamin c
C E Ferulic
Skinceuticals C E Ferulic
A higher-end option that I love is the SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic. This one is considered to be the GOAT, the gold standard vitamin C, with 15% L-ascorbic acid along with ferulic acid and vitamin C. I have literally seen this transform people's skin in real time, as someone who's been practicing for the last 15 years.
★ Best budget friendly vitamin c
LiftActiv Vitamin C Serum
Vichy LiftActiv Vitamin C Serum
In terms of drugstore options, one of my favorites is the Vichy Vitamin C Serum. If you have vitamin C, I always tell patients to store it in a cool dark place, you want to keep it potent and you don't want it to be exposed to sunlight.
★ Best anti-aging tool
N/A
Red light therapy
N/A Red light therapy
Red light therapy or photobiomodulation works by delivering red and near infrared light into your skin. These wavelengths penetrate deep enough to reach your mitochondria. When mitochondria absorb red light, they produce more ATP, which is cellular energy. So with more energy, there's better repair, better regeneration. That results in things like younger skin, healthier joints, better functioning muscles, better circulation in your scalp to potentially promote hair growth. Studies with red light therapy show increases in collagen, elastin, and circulation, which means firmer, smoother, brighter skin.
★ Best professional-grade led mask
Skin LED Light Therapy Mask
CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Mask
My top recommendations, Current Body Skin LED light therapy mask. This is the one I call the best value in the professional-grade mask category. It's FDA cleared, uses 633 nanometer red and 830 nanometer near infrared, and the clinical data behind it is real. One of the most widely used masks globally, and for good reason. It performs at a level you'd expect from a device costing significantly more.

There's a side effect that's super rare -- I don't think I've ever seen it in somebody who's used a prostaglandin analog eyelash serum, but it has been seen with glaucoma drugs, and that is pigmentary change in your iris, which is the colored part of your eye. The concerning thing about this side effect is that if it does happen, it's permanent. It's usually more common in green or hazel eyes, and people end up getting a brown speck in their eye. I used to recommend these eyelash serums because for a long time they were the only options with real efficacy, but that has changed. There are now lash serums that grow lashes through different mechanisms and they are mostly peptide-based without the prostaglandin risks, and those are what I recommend.

I would say be cautious of their peeling solution. I feel like that has messed up so many people's skin because they didn't realize how harsh it was. It's like 30% AHA in there.

I think that these are so cute I love to wear them I feel like they just look so cute on but I don't think that they do anything to help my skin and help my pimples. These just didn't personally do anything for my skin. I think they're cute and I'm glad that they exist but I don't think that they should be a treatment for your pimples. I am a fan of pimple patches as a way for people to avoid touching their pimples, it keeps the pimple protected and in a way it can provide an environment for that pimple to heal because of that moisture and occlusion, but I do find other types of hydrocolloid patches to be a little bit better. So I wouldn't run and get this one. If you want something cute and you happen to be like a pimple picker then maybe you can do this one, but if you're dealing with acne I would start with some good topical products. You want to treat your whole face not just like individual pimples. Of course if you have like a big annoying pimple there's a time and a place for patches like these and spot treatment but you really want to treat your whole face with topical treatments whether it's a retinol salicylic acid product adapalene and prevent the pimples from coming out in the first place. But there's probably better options.

Giving up Botox was especially hard for me as well! I've been using it for so long to help prevent wrinkles and fine lines, so to start seeing those more and more during my pregnancy was annoying.

Dermatologist Reacts to Viral Skincare Hacks (What to Avoid)
"Vaseline is an occlusive agent, it's petroleum jelly, and when used in this manner it can potentially soften the contents of the pore. So if you go afterwards and scrub it off it could potentially help. Thing is I actually don't recommend doing this. If you're prone to blackheads you're likely also prone to acne, and if you are acne prone using Vaseline can potentially increase your risk for breakouts. So I don't recommend this generally."

"Viviscal is another popular hair growth supplement that also contains hydrolized marine collagen. While viviscal does contain this lovely amino acid blend, it does have fewer ingredients than other options, which can make it more suitable for somebody who's already taking a bunch of other vitamins and minerals or adaptogens and they may not need all of that. For people who want to play it safe, viviscal may be just a better option for them."
"ALASTIN Restorative Skin Complex uses elastin and collagen building peptides. Well-formulated peptide products can definitely make a noticeable difference in skin texture and strength when used consistently. "There's topical minoxidil, aka Rogaine, which is a topical treatment that can help stimulate blood flow to the scalp and encourage hair growth. It's available over the counter and works both for men and women with pattern baldness. Even though it's not FDA approved for hair loss outside of pattern baldness, I do think that it's helpful for honestly most forms of hair loss. So, I think it's still a good place to start if you're not sure."

"Rice water can be nourishing for the scalp skin, and healthy skin provides fertile ground for healthy hair follicles, but we still need more studies. Fermented rice water theoretically is supposed to help your scalp microbiome, but there are cases where it could throw off your scalp microbiome. It might help your hair look healthier, but it's not like a guaranteed growth treatment. I don't think it should replace your tried-and-true medical therapies that we know work. If you're dealing with real hair loss, I wouldn't just bank everything on rice water."

"Neosporin is a triple antibiotic ointment. It contains neomycin, polymyxin B, and bacitracin. Neomycin is one of the most common contact allergens in all of dermatology. We see Neosporin contact dermatitis regularly in our practice. Someone applies it to a small wound and within days they have a full allergic reaction spreading beyond the wound site and it freaks people out because it almost looks like a really bad infection. The skin is red, swollen, but a telltale sign is that it's very itchy too. And in most cases it looks way worse than the original wound. Interestingly, one of the other antibiotic ingredients, bacitracin, does have a meaningful allergy track record as well. The frustrating part is that plain petroleum jelly like Vaseline does the same job just as effectively. Moist wound healing is what promotes healing and minimizes scarring and infections and plain petrolatum delivers that without any allergy risk."

"Tretinoin has to be used very gradually, especially if you are new to it, because if you use too much too quickly you're going to certainly get what's called retinoid dermatitis and you can get skin peeling, flaking, drying. Not in everyone, but definitely can happen in many people. If you're new to retinoids, I definitely tell people to start low and slow. Start with a lower strength and just use a little bit very slowly. I tell people like a chocolate chip or a green pea size for the whole face. You can dab it in five places and then rub it in. So let's say you use it two nights a week for two weeks without any issues, then try to go every other night, and if after a month you are good, you could potentially go every night. If you're using it for two weeks, two nights a week, and you're still having issues, what you can do is a retinoid sandwich where you put a layer of moisturizer on first, then the tretinoin, and then you can do another moisturizer on top of that. Some people might think that could affect the effectiveness of the tretinoin, but actually there was a study done to show that doing a moisturizer before tretinoin did not have different effects compared to putting moisturizer only after tretinoin. So doing that moisturizer sandwich is definitely a really helpful technique."

"SkinCeuticals is a luxury brand, but it's also super loved by derms. It's one of those luxury brands that derms can very much stand behind. It has so much science behind each of their formulations. I've met some of the scientists and I have so much respect for them. As a derm who's been recommending SkinCeuticals products for 10-plus years, I've seen people's skin change from using SkinCeuticals products; I see the results firsthand, so it has a special place in my heart. They're known for their SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic; that's their cult product, and I'm a huge fan. My biggest issue is how expensive they are. I don't think your whole line needs to be from SkinCeuticals, because otherwise you may go into debt. Products work. I'm going to have to give this one a five."

"When you wake up I would use a gentle cleanser maybe a gentle exfoliating cleanser and then apply some kind of anti-acne treatment that has AHA acid. Certain brands that make over-the-counter AHA acid are The Ordinary 10% AHA acid, Niatem has one the 10% AHA acid and Paula's Choice also has a 10% AHA acid. Then of course you want to apply sunscreen, super important when it comes to healing your acne marks and scars. "There actually is some science behind it. It's not super impressive, though. There was a study in 2015 that compared rosemary oil to 2% minoxidil and found that after 6 months of use, both groups had similar improvements in hair growth. The rosemary group even had less scalp itching. Rosemary oil is thought to work by improving the scalp circulation and reducing inflammation around your hair follicles. But it's not a miracle overnight fix. You need consistent use. At least 6 months to really start seeing results. The study was small, and another really big issue is that it was comparing it to 2% minoxidil. Most derms recommend 5% minoxidil. I have a feeling that the 5% minoxidil would outperform rosemary oil. If you are going to use it, mix a few drops with a carrier oil, whether it's Jojoba or coconut oil, and massage it in. It's not hype for nothing, just don't expect it to outdo prescriptions or even standard over-the-counter treatments like 5% minoxidil."

It's very hydrating, it has hyaluronic acid and it has watermelon in it which does have some hydrating properties. Niacinamide can help nourish your skin barrier so it can further help add to that hydration to the skin. What I thought was most interesting about this product was the glow that it left on your face, so if you want kind of like that shiny dewy hydrating glow this is for you. I wouldn't recommend it if you don't want to look really shiny and dewy and glowy, so it's sort of personal preference. As a hydrating ingredient I think it's fine. "Design flaw. The particles are jagged and irregular, which means that they create micro tears in the skin barrier rather than gently buffing the surface. Those micro tears can cause inflammation, they can accelerate barrier breakdown, and they can worsen acne in people who are already prone to it. Dermatologist Reacts to Viral Skincare Hacks (What to Avoid)
"St. Ives is a long-standing object of hate amongst dermatologists. The exfoliating agents in there, the harsh beads or like the ground up walnut, can potentially cause micro tears to your skin, affecting your skin barrier and causing more damage. After water, the second ingredient is denatured alcohol, which is not a good thing. It's only going to dry out your skin. We've got citrus fruits in there as well, and all of these can be harsh for the skin barrier and increase your risk for phytodermatitis. So yeah, I wouldn't recommend it."
"First Aid Beauty, also a Sephora brand. I am a fan of a lot of their products. I also love their ingrown hair peel pads, which is great for people with ingrown hair. So, use alongside a retinoid. I'm also a big fan of their radiance peel pads. "Red light therapy or photobiomodulation works by delivering red and near infrared light into your skin. Studies with red light therapy show increases in collagen, elastin, and circulation, which means firmer, smoother, brighter skin."

"When mitochondria absorb red light, they produce more ATP, which is cellular energy. So with more energy, there's better repair, better regeneration. So that results in things like younger skin, healthier joints, better functioning muscles, better circulation in your scalp to potentially promote hair growth. Studies with red light therapy show increases in collagen, elastin, and circulation, which means firmer, smoother, brighter skin. And here's the kicker. It does all this without causing damage, unlike potentially with lasers or peels. I personally recommend masks or handheld wands that emit light at the wavelength between 630 to 660. For skin rejuvenation, we focus a lot of between like 630 and 633, although some great devices use between 640 and 660. And then when it comes to infrared, we're getting closer to like that 850 nanometer range. For skin rejuvenation, you want to aim for about 5 to 15 minutes per session. We do recommend like three to five sessions per week. The lights should feel warm, but definitely not hot. And yes, eye protection is super important. One study showed an 86% reduction in crows feet wrinkles after 12 weeks of just 9 minutes a day."
The Truth About Red Light Therapy for Skin (from a dermatologist)
"Red light therapy is something that I have personally incorporated into my routine over the last three or four years and I have certainly noticed a difference. I've noticed that I have needed less Botox. Red light therapy has been definitely a great supplement to my skin routine. It is safe for all skin tones, but if you have melasma or very sensitive skin, you want to start slow. Melasma is related to increased oxidative stress in the skin. If you have better functioning cells, better repair and regeneration, you can theoretically improve melasma. A lot of people do report improvement with melasma. But you want to be careful because melasma is very light sensitive. If you look for the specific nanometer wavelength between the 630s range, it should not affect melasma, but you want to make sure that you're not using a device that is emitting a lot of heat because heat definitely can make melasma worse. Please avoid direct eye exposure. If you're pregnant or if you have light sensitivity or if you're on meds that can increase light sensitivity, you should talk to your doctor first. Red light is nonionizing, so that means it won't damage your DNA or burn your skin. More isn't better. Overuse might reduce the benefits or irritate your skin."
"Red light therapy or low-level light therapy has some supportive evidence, but if you're dealing with real hair loss or hair shedding, hair thinning, especially from something like androgenetic alopecia or telogen effluvium, these nice little options may not cut it."

"I honestly love this eye cream. I feel like it really has made a difference. Honestly, this is like one of the only products that has actually helped my under eyes. This eye cream has vitamin C, it has THD ascorbate vitamin C, which I am a fan of, and it's great for people who have sensitive skin. Ascorbic acid can be a little irritating for some people, so it's a nice form of vitamin C. It also has a peptide that can help with collagen production, so theoretically it can help with fine lines and wrinkles. It has caffeine, and I am a fan of caffeine in eye creams because the issues around the eyes are different from the rest of the face. We want to work on hiding dark circles, helping to kind of depuff any kind of swelling that we might have, and I think caffeine is something to look for in eye creams."

Retinoids4 reviews
"If you're interested in anti-aging I would recommend using a retinol. You may lose some of your freckles but I still think the benefits of retinol outweigh having some freckles. If you're new to retinoids I definitely tell people to start low and slow. Start with a lower strength and just use a little bit very slowly. I tell people like a chocolate chip or a green pea size for the whole face. You can dab it in five places and then rub it in. So let's say you use it two nights a week for two weeks without any issues, then try to go every other night, and if after a month you are good you could potentially go every night. If you're still having issues after two weeks of two nights a week, what you can do is a retinoid sandwich where you put a layer of moisturizer on first, then the retinol, and then you can do another moisturizer on top of that. There was a study done to show that doing a moisturizer before retinol did not have different effectiveness."

"If you have more sensitive skin you may want to consider a more gentle option with a retinol like CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum. Retinoids are perfect when addressing the strength of the wall of your pore because you want to support the collagen that is keeping that hair follicle wall intact otherwise the pore will just easily expand when contents fill the pore."

"This is famous for their snail mucin, which so many people love. An amazing hydrating ingredient. I love snail mucin and I use the Cosrx snail mucin for many years. I love it. I just don't think everyone is a good candidate for it. Like if you're not already using a vitamin C and a retinol and a good cleanser and moisturizer, I wouldn't run to a snail mucin."

Is Viral Skincare Worth the Hype?
"I really really like this power Essence. It's super sticky but it's so hydrating on my skin and it also leaves you looking so glowy. I'm a fan of the Cosrx snail mucin, I just find it to be a very hydrating ingredient. It works well as a humectant, humectants are what draw water in to keep the skin hydrated. I think this one's also relatively affordable so I think it's fine if you need that extra hydration. I wouldn't use it by itself, I would always layer some kind of moisturizer on top of that to kind of trap in that moisture. I think this is too light to use as a standalone product. I like it also whenever I do gua sha and whenever I use a microcurrent device, I just use it almost as like a lubricant for my face and it works really well."
"SK-II is a J beauty brand that's also a luxury brand and they are famous for their facial treatment essence. I'm a huge fan of this product. This product has a yeast ferment filtrate with galactomyces that has been found to help brighten the skin. And there's other goodies in there that really nourish the skin. Like it just seems like water, it seems like it does nothing but it does so much. It hydrates, nourishes, helps brighten the skin. I think their treatment essence is where they shine. Super expensive though."

"There's an extract from a fern plant called polypodium leucotomos that's shown to enhance your skin's ability to defend against UV radiation. Heliocare is the most popular brand with polypodium leucotomos containing supplements. This is something I do recommend for people who are at high risk for skin cancers including melanoma or for people who are going to be outside for prolonged periods of time, people who burn pretty easily even with sunscreen and other sun protective measures."

"Brands like Tirtir have a wonderful milky toner. These can help layer hydration. They can support the barrier and improve skin comfort without overloading actives or heavier textures on your skin. These are especially helpful if your skin feels reactive, dry, or inflamed, but still needs that extra glow."

"This one is interesting. So it does have some gentle exfoliating enzymes in it, proteases as well as other fruit enzymes. I would be very cautious with somebody in their teens because your skin cell turnover is still pretty good. I would be okay with this one just because the enzymes look pretty gentle and it also has gentle ingredients. It looks like there's glycerin and panthenol, allantoin, and some sodium hyaluronate. So this does look like it's going to be nourishing in addition to very gently exfoliating. I like it."

Acne1 review
"I think that these are so cute I love to wear them I feel like they just look so cute on but I don't think that they do anything to help my skin and help my pimples. But there's probably better options."

"I'm a really big fan of the oral supplement Sun Powder which has Helioare and then glutathione. Glutathione is one of your body's master antioxidants. It works by shifting pigment production towards a lighter type of melanin. Some studies show that skin brightening effects, especially in oral or sublingual forms, can be helpful. You want to look for liposomal delivery systems for better absorption. Sun Powder has glutathione with polypodonium leucotomos."

STOP Making These Sun Protection Mistakes! (You're Doing It Wrong)
"My personal favorite supplement is Sun Powder because I think it's more comprehensive. So it definitely has Polypodium lucatus but it has other sunprotective antioxidants like nicotinamide, astaxanthin, and then it also has some other skin health ingredients in it like collagen peptides, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid. And so I think it's a good one for people who are just looking for overall skin health and protection."
